Observation after watching a few NHL games...
Permalink Closed

In this new NHL, a lead is worthless until time runs out. What I mean is that even if you are up 2, 3, 4 goals, you cannot stop attacking.

Every game I watch it seems one team takes a lead, sometimes a substansial lead at that, and the team that trails comes back.

I really get the feeling that whoever has the last shot will win the game.

We may have a Vezina winner with a GAA over 3.5 goal per game.

Observations... hate OT and Shoot-out... rather have 3 points for a win!

I hope the refs keep it up and keep the clutching and grabbing types of players where they belong... in the penalty box.

The new NHL is all about speed, passing, and the breakout pass. The skating teams are going to be the ones that win out.

The Maple Laughs ("leafs" for the bud lovers) are old. Even tonight, the second shoot out with the Sens... the Buds are proving only one thing... they are old and can barely keep up with any skating team. Watch and see. By Christmas there will be panic in the teams that cannot keep up to the speed of the game.

European goalies are going to have the edge because of the shoot-out. After watching the Oilers Canucks game on Saturday... the speed of the game and the break out system of the Oilers kept the Canucks on their heals. Cloutier will not last in goal, and neither will those goalies who are the "butterfly" type of goalie. Each goal in the shoot out was high on the glove side. One was a back hand and the other a wrist shot. Markenen the Oiler goalie was outstanding and knew just how to play the shooters. I relished seeing Burtuzzi choke and miff his shot. BTW... Burtuzzi should be banned for what he did... he should have a life time ban... I personally cannot wait to see the retribution when he plays against the Avalanche. The guy is a thug and gangster and there is no room for his ilk in the NHL.

Shooters, and in particular European shooters are going to bloom in this shoot out. Wait and see just how many of them pot the goals to win the shoot out.

I am no fan of the shoot out.

I would rather have kept the system with a straight game with no over time unless it is the play-offs. I would have given 3 points for a win and 1 point for a tie. That way, you have people playing to win and it ends up being decided without a shoot out. That to me would have guaranteed playing hockey full tilt the whole game. Three points for a win is way better than this overtime and shoot out crap.

Go Habs! Crush the Buds and Sens and those bad Bruins!

I for one have always been an advocate for opening up the game. I detested the trap. Still do. BUT, (and this is a butt as big as Rita McNeil's), they have gone form one extreme to the other. Last night, watching the Sens/Laffs, this became painfully obvious to me. It has gotten to the point where a mear tap on the side of a player with your stick as he blows by you warrants a penalty. I feel badly for the dmen. Now when they play the puck they have to put up with a freight train coming in at them at full speed. W ehave seen Sheldon Souray go from being a very consistent Dman in that leagu eto looking comppletely out of place because forwards are allowed to blow by untouched.

All I am saying is that common sense should prevail here. Yes, if you are impeding a players progress in anyway, that should be a penalty. But a tap on the leg with the stick to let him know you are there, or touching his arm as he goes by, should NOT be a penalty. Players are scared to death to do anything now. There is less physical contact in the league right now then there was in my marriage which i ssaying alot.
