A buddy told me that in the 83-84 season both Pens and Devils purposely tried to lose games at season's end to acquire the number one draft pick ( Mario Lemieux).
Has this been proven or does any of the older posters(like myself) remember this time frame more specifically?
Can't help thinking that if this holds water that it was a smart business move by Pens owners. Without Mario, Pens would of folded long ago. Although to this day they're still losing money. Maybe a better business move would of been a new building. Sorry I'm rambling but I'm interested in knowing if anyone has heard about this or if it has ever been proven?
they haven't admitted to it but the majority of everyone says they did, including me. Ottawa did the same thing to get Alexandere "The Not So Great" Daigle. That is the reason they are doing the draft lottery now, this way if you finish in last you don't automatically get the number 1 pick
I don't remember Pittsburg or New Jersey throwing any games but what I remember Pittsburg trading Randy Carlyle who was their top defenceman and not too far removed after winning the Norris Trophy for Best DefenceMan - so this would make it harder for them to win games.....
