"The Canadiens acquired him (meaning Samsonov)at great expense to light a fire under Kovalev, but the question I've got to ask is why someone blessed with as much talent as Kovalev needs anyone to juice up his offence. It would have been a lot cheaper to buy a mirror for Kovalev."

I wasn't a fan of the Samsonov signing, but in his defense he's usually shown a lot of work ethic in the past. He's willing to get back and check, etc... I don't think he's strictly a "fancy boy."

jeez...can we give Sammy a chance? Did you forget how long it took Kovalev to get in the swing of things when the Habs acquired him? Can we give new players a chance? He hasn't been a bad player...

Let's attempt to keep the same threads to a minimum. Continue this in the Kovalev thread please.

To be fair, this is also a Red Fisher thread.

One of the things Kovy mentioned this week was his willingness to play centre.  Well with 6:38 left in the 3rd peiord, and the Canadiens trailing 4-2, Kovalev was placed at centre with Samsonov on the left, and Perezhogin on the right.

Well what do you know, the line scores on its first shift together.

Minutes later, the helps set up the tying goal.

So, a new (well former but new now) centre is born.

Samsonov - Kovalev - Perezhogin

And speaking of Perezhogin, he scored a hi-lite reel goal tonight too.

I hope carbo keeps that line intact, they looked pretty good.

Kudos to Kovalev!  UNDOUBTEDLY (as almost everyone agrees) he is just a phenom!  Trouble is though...just give him a few more shifts...and he always seems to lose interest/intensity/effectiveness/passion/desire.

After the game I attended Carbo's press conference.  Carbonneau mentioned that the new trio earned a right to play again starting the next game.  Someone also question Kovalev at centre.  carbo answered that Kovy can play centre, if he wants to get involved, and Saturday he was doing just that.  carbo also mentioned that on key defensive situations there's a good chance KJovy won't play centre or won't take the draw.

Kovy was 3/5 in faceoffs on Saturday.

Far as I'm concerned, GOOD.
If Kovalev wants to play a bigger role and take more responsibility, well then, isn't that what we all want?

The point of this opening thread is kovy is a support player and not a marquee guy. He isn't a player that you would build a team around because he doesn't boost the whole team like an Ovechkin.

Note that if he isn't playing with someone he respects to have capabilities like his own than he simply doesn't play hard untill the situation is changed. Rather than coming out and saying, I don't want to play with Plecs, he says...Oh by the way, I can play center. Go to type players make something happen regardless of who is on that line because they bring positive attitude, hard work and confidence to their line mates.

That's what has made Kovy a project his whole career. The challenge of the coach to find out what will make him tick on a given day. The guy will frustrate the heck out of you one game, then the next game, he's magic.

Well hopefully he's happy enough now to produce with his fellow countrymen now that he got his way.
