Streit likely to face Flames

By PAT HICKEY

Mark Streit is poised to make his season debut tomorrow night when the Canadiens are home to the Calgary Flames (7:30 p.m., RDS, CJAD Radio-800).

The Canadiens suffered a double blow Saturday when defencemen Craig Rivet and Mathieu Dandenault left the game in the third period of a 3-2 shootout loss to the Ottawa Senators.

Coach Guy Carbonneau said yesterday that Dandenault suffered a strained hamstring and was doubtful for the Calgary game and a Wednesday night visit to Chicago.

He was more optimistic about Rivet, who took a shot off the heel during a third-period Ottawa power play. Rivet left the Bell Centre Saturday night on crutches, but Carbonneau said there was a chance he could play tomorrow. He underwent an MRI yesterday and his condition will be re-evaluated today.

Dandenault's injury opens the door for Streit, the Swiss veteran who had a very good training camp, but found himself as the odd man out after the Canadiens acquired Janne Niinimaa in a trade for Mike Ribeiro.

"I was disappointed because I'm a player and I want to play," Streit said after he was one of eight players to participate in an optional on-ice practice at the Sylvio Mantha Arena in Cote St. Paul. "But I understand how things work and I've been working hard and waiting for a chance to show what I can do."

Streit has been through this before. He started last season as the seventh defenceman, but he was in a far different space because he was a National Hockey League rookie at age 27. It took him a while to adjust to the North American game and work on his confidence, but he played 47 regular-season games. He came into camp this year with more confidence and it showed in the preseason games.

The Canadiens will face an additional problem if Dandenault and Rivet are both out. With Francis Bouillon and prospect Jean-Philippe Cote sidelined with knee injuries, the Canadiens are thin on defence. The most likely to be recalled from Hamilton are veteran Patrick Traverse and Dan Jancevski, who was in line for the seventh defence spot before the Canadiens claimed Traverse on waivers.

We should find-out what type of work ethic these Habs have fairly quickly this evening...because Darryl Sutter's team should be in a real ugly mood!

...And-o thinks that the Flames are very much over-rated (great 'D' and solid goalkeeping)...but you can't ever discount their willingness to muck along the boards!

(on the other hand...Calgary is one of the few teams that are as weak as the Habs are at the centre slot...CLASH OF THE DONUTS!!!?)

...although it is now corrected, And-o made a 'freudian' slip by originally stating that the 'Hab' (instead of the Flames) are highly over-rated!!!

Hmmmmm...might take And-o into a shrink for a 'tun'in!

Great "D" indeed!  I see on TSN's "Plays of the Week" that a Dion Phaneuf body check was the #1 play!  That's the first time that's ever happened, I'll bet.

If  I could have any two players to start a new team with, it would be Crosby and Phaneuf.  That kid's the next Bobby Orr (well, Scott Stevens at least).

Bush non-call by the ref.

Nonetheless, I love the Habs' combativeness - kudos to Souray and Komisarek for jumping in there for their teammates.

Despite their goal, the Flames' PP looks anemic.

Kiprusoff practically attempts to injure Kovy and we get another shorthanded situation from the scuffle afterwards?
And then the Komisarek penalty with the Iginla situation?
Reffing pretty lame so far.

2-2 now

This game is getting nasty. Let's hope the refs can keep it sorted and they can play clean, but rough hockey instead. I hate seeing players get hurt.

Get that lead back!

I hate to complain about the reffing, but that period was brutal.  The play you mention was a very obvious call, but no call.

A very entertaining period, however!  I find myself wishing Koh-arse-ki were reffing; we'd be in for some make-up calls, big-time!

Flames playing smart gritty hockey. Habs losing their cool a little.

Good clean solid check on Downey. You have to keep your head up especially when you're 5' tall.

The Kovy thing wasn't called because Kovy skated through the crease paint and the goalie can protect this area...it is their area.

Iggy, Regher and Phaneuf can play on my team any day!

 Great game by Komi.

Yikes that is some brutal officiating...

Who hit Downey...late hit and should have been 5 and a game. Horrible and the non call set the tone for a chippy game. Terrible Officiating.

You can count on one hand the times I've mentioned the reffing on this board. That period makes my list.

You can't clear the crease with your stick.

& Kovy was out of the crease by the time he did that.... no longer "fair game".

Man, what team are you cheering for, AB?  Downey did not have the puck; the hit was clean by itself, but it should have been a charging call, or interference, as Downey was no longer in the play.

And the goalie made a move to inrterfere with Kovalev; that should have been a penalty too, in my book.  I don't think he was in the paint.

What game are you watching? Downey still had possession. That was a good clean shoulder check. Have to keep the head up in this league.

Also want to add that the Habs sure left Huet out to dry on the second goal especially Kovy who was leaving the zone rather than picking up his man. Complete break down.
