It's not surprising that Mike Ribeiro is off to a good start. He has always had talent, unrecognized by most of the members of this board. I had predicted that he would have a good year and it pains me because he should have never been traded.

He is one of a few Quebecers that we have on the team and he should have remained a Canadien. It's too bad of the direction the club is taking and I believe that Gainey needs to go.

By the way, who is next on your bashing list??

Not sure why being from Quebec is so crucial to being a Hab in your World...but please just stay there!

Riblet was a cancer...he needed to be moved...and Bob did a heckuva job getting something decent for him.

Will he have a good year...OH YEAH!  But, that wasn't gonna happen in Montreal!

I didn't like this trade because of who we got in return. Niinima has a history of being a bum. In saying that though, the only fair thing to do is evaluate at seasons' end. Hopefully Niininma has matured. He deserves a chance just like the many Ribs got as a Hab.

For the record, I never bashed Ribs for his talent because I knew because we're such a thin team down the middle that without his points, we wouldn't of made the playoffs the last couple seasons. For that I'm thankfull we had him but not happy that we were soooooo thin down the middle. With Plecs though, it's time to move on without him. Just too bad we couldn't of packaged him up for a solid centermen. Because of Gainey not being able to land us a d-man, it became a desperate trade. Those are the trades that are hard to win.

It shouldn't matter where Ribs is from. What matters is that he didn't fit in anymore.

Ribs has one good game production wise, and suddenly the trade was a bad one, and all Riblet bashers should eat crow? Ribs trade value had declined based on the miserable season he had last year. The Stars have him playing on the fourth line, and on the second power play unit, he is averaging a 11 minutes a game, probably a better reflection of his "hidden talent".

Riberio was given every chance to deliver with the Habs, and despite his decent offensive skills, his lack of speed and strength were issues that made him  a liability in Montreal. He was an imperfect fit with the Habs. Could Gainey have gotten more for him in a trade, hard to say, although no one has been knocking at Jason Allison's door these days, and in some respects (in terms of production and foot speed) they are mirror images of each other.

Flower, you are kidding, right?

I don't think anybody on this board hated Ribs - but he needed a change (can anyone say Theo?)

If you are insinuating that a born and bred Quecbois player should be kept on the roster just because they can speak french...well...you've lost me.

Right.

BTW...Being from Quebec has nothing to do with being a hab. How old are you? Are you stuck back in the 70's?

I figure this post from JohnM hits the nail on the head:

_____________________________________________________________________________

Ribs is the same player he was here. He'll get his 50-60 points because he has the skill to feed players. He'll do nothing in games that actually count and when the playoffs come, expect zero out of him.

No big surprises here. He had some 3 pt games as a Hab too...

Get the dark shades off And-O. Gainey gave away a second line center for Ninny. One idiot for another. There is a reason that Ninny had more addresses than the yellow pages in his career..HELOOOOO>>NO ONE WANTS HIM!!!! It i searly so I will give Pleks a chance., But he has done very little to show me he is a second line center on this team or any other for that matter.

Barry, I usually read your posts and nod my head in agreement( one or two exceptions). But I gotta tell ya, I think you are WAAAAY off on this one.

1. Ninny has been logging a fair amount of ice time in crucial situations...for a resaon. He has been pretty solid. Mark my words...that was a crafty move by BG. Depth at defense is crucial in this fast paced "new" NHL.

2. Plek has been the BEST player on that line hands down. I knew if that line did not bust out of the gates people would blame Plek. watch those games. Plek has been more than doing his part. Kovy and samsonov are just not getting the job done. they are individual artists. They need a banger on the ice with them to crash the let. Sorry Barry, but I do not see how plek is at fault at all.

Being a French Canadian has always been a large part of being a Montreal Canadien. It has always been a recognizable identity of the team. From the Rocket to Patrick Roy. It seems that Bob Gainey has suddenly forgoten this (and aparently so have many of you).

This is not why I am in favour of Gainey being moved. All you have to do is look at his moves since ariving to Montreal. Kovalev, Bonk,Hainsey, Beauchamant....Price etc.

I say bring back Serge Savard.

I don't know. During Gainey's tenure the team has gone from utter garbage to a playoff team with an upside. Maybe it's not dramatic, but neither were any of Buffalo's moves before they exploded. I wasn't happy about the Price pick either, although Latendresse might make up for it, but otherwise things are going pretty well. Let's not lament the loss of Ribeiro, of all people.

With regard to Gainey forgetting about the francophone identity of the team, you may want to check your facts. In the past 4 draft years the Habs have made 33 picks. 10 of those picks can from the Quebec junior league, 2 from WHL, 5 from OHL, 1 from BCHL, 2 from NCAA, 4 from Russia, 2from Slovakia,1 from Czech,1 belarus,1 from Sweden,1 from Finland,2 fromOSHL. 30 percent of the Habs drafts were from Quebec.

Savard as gm did win a cup, he also made some abysmal draft picks of francophone players, remember these gems: 1988: first round pick Eric Chouniard, 1989: Larouche in the second round,Sevigny in the third round. 1985: Jose Charbonneau, 12th overall. Under Gainey's tenure Latendresse and Lapierre were drafted.

Over the past 20 years, francophone content of players has diminished in the league as a whole, there are 30 teams looking for the best talent available, regardless of language. On that issue the Habs should be no different. In Savard's last years as gm, the Habs farm system was in total disarray,Andre Savard and subsequently Gainey have rebuilt the farm system with good drafts based on ability, not language.

Alright guys/gals, everyone calm down.............nobody liked and wanted Ribs to stay and produce more then me, i really liked this guy, almost went and put his name on my jersey 2 years ago.....i think habs fans need someone to put blame on, Theo.....gone, Bonk....nobody expected that much out of him anyways, Ribeiro has a great season and not so much the next which makes him the perfect canidate.....He has been putting points on the board for Dallas, 3 the other night, weather he's on the 4th line and playing 11 mins a game, he's still doing more the Ninnima is for us right now. Gainey has impressed me at times, and dissappointed me at times. Lets just let it go, keep on smilin, habs got at least 1 point in all 4 games, once Guy figures out who to put out there in the shootouts we'll be laughing....Ottawa doesn't put there best out there and look.....try someone different Guy.........

Ribs fan....Cheers

Muley my point is this..for And-O to paint Gainey as a genius in this trade is just a stretch. Everyopne knows I am not a Ribs fan. But for Gainey to sign him to a 2 mill contract and then trade him for a dman that Dallas did not want is not genius. On the other side of teh coin I think that it is a bit premature to be asking us to eat crow over Ribs. It was a trade that benefited both players obviously. But not genius. Geesh the way some posters go on about BG I expect to see him walking across the water to Montreal instead of taking the tunnel. In regards to saying that Pleks has been the "best on that line so far" is only pointing out that the other two have underperformed. It does nothing to say that Pleks is  a legitimate center.

And-o accepts Barry's criticism as being quite reasonable...but I still think BG did one heckuva job in putting some lipstick on a pig in order to make that pig more attractive!

Anyway...Riblet played about 8 minutes last night...and 7 of those were on the powerplay!

...so, somebody likes him!

Doesn't that means And-o has to post his picture?

And Niniima has played well for us so far so I'm still happy about the trade.

Now let's see the pic!

Hey first time poster, but ive been reading you guys for years. First off I had to respond to this foolishness. Im 22 right now i played hockey in Quebec until i was 18 then i moved to ontario for junior. So i know all about the French Canadian pride. Hell i was born and raised in Montreal for 18 years.  This guy has to be joking with this Ribeiro french canadian pride crap. First off i saw Ribzies goal saturday night. Granted i was a little overwhelmed with loving my life with alcohol, but all it was, was a deflection off his leg. WOW MY GOD WE LOST GUY LAFLEUR! Give me a break here. THE GUY WAS A TOTAL CANCER IN THE LOCKER ROOM! HIM THEO AND DAGENAIS, THEY LOOKED LIKE A FREAKIN BOY BAND, NOT HOCKEY PLAYERS! You want to talk about french Canadian hockey pride? You take pride in a guy who dives better than Alexandre Despatie? Who flops around the ice like hes a piece of bacon sizzling in the microwave? This is youre french Canadian pride? What a total joke! Dont even bastardize THE ROCKET's name in the same sentence as this flake! Gainey gets defensive depth and you cry for Serge Savard? I wouldve traded Ribeiro for a jofa helmet.  Ok i love seeing the Quebec stars in the league just as much as the next guy! But this is getting up there with prejudice, who gives a damn if hes from Austrialia! If he gives you 10 solid minutes and goes in the corner and gets his nose dirty, sign him up! Montreal is playing with a pride that i havent seen in years. That little melley gave me goosebumps. If it was the Habs of 2005-06 you would see Ribeiro on the ice like he'd been shot with an AK-47. then get up and give a fruity smile to the other team.

This obsession with what And-o looks like is rather bizarre!

Honestly folks - you ain’t missing a thing!  And-o is just your basic ‘Average And-o’…about 5’11’, 168lbs, light brown hair, regular build – no noticeable birth defects or freakish characteristics to speak-of!

And-o (and I) urge this board not to get so wrapped up in aesthetics…it’s what’s on the inside that counts…and And-o just oozes all things ‘Hab’!  Plus, there are a lot of nut-bars on the web…and And-o doesn’t ever want ‘a scene’!

…besides, And-o’s conditions for posting a photo have been made known for ages (both Mulsey and JohnM must post their respective photo’s…on their respective words of honor of course…and, the mysterious enigma known as ‘Forum Fan’ must also post a self-photograph as well!  Then…and ONLY then…does the ‘real’ And-o reveal his true identity to all here at GOHABS!

A GOOD START?

HE GOT 8 MINTUES OF ICE LAST NIGHT IN ANAHEIM, BECAUSE HE CAN'T PLAY 5 ON 5.  HE'S A ONE DIMENSIONAL POWERPLAY SPECIALIST (AND THE TERM SPECIALIST IS USED VERY LOOSELY).

RIBERIO IS A STIFF.

Couldn't agree more!

I would've been happy if all we received in return was a little more cap space. Bouillon went down and Traverse was back in town. If BG hadn't traded for Niinemaa, Traverse may have been in the lineup!
