Kopitar...

I was so frustrated when the Habs passed on drafting Anze Kopitar in the draft when he they decided to take Carey Price...now based on his trading camp he looks like he will be an excellent goalie..but the Habs have always shown the ability to draft goalies well.

The most pressing need for the team was a big strong forward and they could have drafted the 6'4 220lbs Kopitar who is a fantastic skater and willing to head to the net.

Sure he came from a less than impressive hockey nation Slovenia ...but given the fact that the Habs needed to get bigger and more talented up front...i still don't know how we could have passed him up.

I was wondering when this post would come up.

Well, for the record, I agree with you.

I'm not even convinced Price was a first-rounder. Let's hope I eat my words in two years or so.

I too was disappointed when we drafted someone other than him. I complained bitterly at the time, since after watching him play in the world championships I couldn't see how anyone would be picked ahead of him other than Crosby. To see him drop out of the top ten was a real shocker, and LA deserves him, since they were the only ones to look past the fact that he wasn't born in one of the top 10 hockey countries.

I guess after seeing some Danish and Norwegian middle round picks teams didn't want to risk adding such an obviously great player to their team.

I let Gainey off the hook a little since he took a goalie, and it is nearly impossible to compare a keeper to a forward, but any team that took a forward instead of him made the decision based on something other than skills, size, attitude, coachability, success, etc.

This is in no way meant as a slight to Carey Price, Jordan Staal or any of the other very talented players in that draft. They just aren't as good.

This guy would have addressed a need for sure..speed and S I Z  E! He is the full package. Instead we draft another freaking goalie!!!! On another note, I see Ivanans scored his first goal in LA the other night.

And-o still gets upset thinking about selecting Price 5th overall!!!

The kid is/will be a good NHL goalie.....but when you pick 5th overall...and 'sure thing' prospects are available...you don't mess around with 'hunches'!!!

NO WAY WAS CAREY PRICE THE 5TH BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE THAT DAY...NO WAY!  NO HOW!  NEVER!

(see...And-o still hasn't let it go!!!)

The only dumber pick than Price 5th overall was when Milbury took Dipietro number one.

Lets place this Price pick in Gainey's goof-up pile and hope his good pile out balances it.

It's a little early to do that. Which player picked after Price in the first round is prospering in the league today? Give it time boys, goalies take time to come into form.

I still think a #5 pick on a goalie is too much of a gamble. Price better be the second coming of Dryden-Roy-Plante...or else.

At least there was good article about Price this weekend in the Gazette...

I think he was 6-2 with a 2.21 GAA and .929 save pct.

Maybe Gainey was right...although after that performance against the Laffs...we surely could have used Kopitar/
