Both Goaltenders Cristobal Huet and David Aebischer have had to deal with the uncertainties at the commencement of the season. In Pre-season games, Huet's goals against average was 5.00 and his save percentage was .833. Aebischer was slightly better at 3.97 et a save percentage of .839.
Huet performance in Buffalo, and Aebischer's in Toronto, have to an extent re-assured people. Aebischer has been credited with the Habs first victory of the season after stopping 36 shots in 65 minutes. He was solid during the shootout, only giving way to Sundin.
"I never had doubts," said Aebischer at today's practice at the Verdun Auditorium. "During the pre-season games, I made a few mental errors. But those errors only required a few adjustments."
The Swissman admitted being nervous for his first game of the season. "It was special considering we were playing Toronto. I was a little nervous. I admit that I have always loved playing in Toronto".
In Competition
Huet and Aebischer are in direct competition with each other for the honor of being the number one position. It is a friendly fight but real just the same.
"There is a competition and each game is important" said Aebischer. "Except that we are not going to analyze after each game. We both want to play. For me, I think I played well, but the important thing is we got the two points in the standings. That game is behind us now.
Guy Carbonneau will announce on Tuesday who is starting goalie will be for Wednesday in Philadelphia.
Five or Six Games
Carbonneau is going to be patient with his second trio of Sergei Samsonov, Tomas Plekanec and Alex Kovalev. In two games, that trio were limited to tow assists by Kovalev.
" I am expecting more, Carbonneau admits. But we have only played two games. Alex is one of the most talented players in the league. Samsonov has had good seasons, and Plekanec is still finding his way between the two."
Carbo has made notes.
"They are looking for each other on the ice. They are not helping each other enough in the offensive zone. They are playing to wide apart. To be effective, the forwards need to evolve in a restricted area, they have to play closer together. That's what they are not doing."
Carbonneau patience has it's limits.
"I am going to wait until we have played 5-6 games. We have to give them time to feel comfortable together. But if afterwards it's still not working, then we may have to make some decisions."

Nice... I think Abby played very well on Saturday.
&... I love the new mask... possibly a favorite of mine. I think the Quebec license plate is a real hoot. (BTW ~ I spelt it A-B-B-Y for the longest time then changed to A-E-B-Y 'cause that how everyone else spelt it... now that I know he spells it with 2 B's... I've changed back )
Great to see that Carbonneau is not BSing at all. He's laying it out there for Kovy and Samsonov to read. And he's already signaled that he WILL make decisions, but he won't panic. All around makes me confident.

Funny you should mention the spelling. I always spelled it Aebi because that's what he had written on his mask last year. But now he has it written as Abby, so that's what I'll call him. It's all up to him

For the most part I was unimpressed with Aebischer on Saturday night and I still think he is a streaky goalie. He always seems borderline out of control when he plays. I think opposing shooters will learn to fake the shot and then shoot and beat him often. The reality is if the Leafs knew how to shoot they would have killed the Habs on Saturday.
Huet is much more solid and in control and deserves to be the number 1.
But the bigger problem is our defence has been weak so far in the first two games and need to pick up the play. The big exceptios to that would be Komocop who is developing into a solid... solid Dman.

Abby does have an unorthodox style, but if it gets us a win, I'm happy about it. Some of the best goalies in the league had different styles. Remember Roy when he first came in, had a style that most goalies play today. It gets the job done, but sometimes it makes it interesting and hilarious to watch someone different in the net. You couldn't ask for a more hilarious goalie than the Dominator. Hackett was a different style as well. When he was on his game, there were few better goalies around.

I agree with adam13 he's right on the money. Roy never had an unorthodox style he made the mold for other goalies to copy, wouldn't you say.Can you imagine other goalies copying ABBY's style, holy frig (ha ha) i'm laughing as i'm thinkin of it...it would look like a circus out there with a pile of seals flopping around on the ice lol ha ha
