Everyone in the past few days are praising the genius Lou Lamoriello. The GM of the Devils managed to subtract the salaries of Vladimir Malakhov and Alexander Mogilny from his salary cap in a manner that allowed him to sign Brian Gionta , Paul Martin and David Hale.
But there has been little talk about the GM of the Sharks, Doug Wilson, who accepted to help his colleague by trading for the rights to Malakhov. Wilson is laughing all the way to the bank on this trade, as he got a 1st round draft choice for free.
Lamoriello was caught by the neck so badly by Malakhov's contract, that was obliged to trade with Wilson and give him a gift. And Malakhov you say? Wilson couldn't care less about him. He doesn't have to give him one red cent in salary as he is retired. All it will cost him is the job of accounting for his salary(3.5 million) in his cap space.
Contrary to Lamoriello, Wilson has all kinds of room, as he built his first class team without throwing his money out the window......
San Jose will a second first round pick in a lean draft year and as I expect both teams to do well, they will get late in the round selections. Two first rounders is pretty good still.

Jersey gets to keep Gionta.
Win-Win.
And for those who are pooping on Lou, what about Wilson? If Wilson was not a willing dance partner then Lou does not clear the cap space that Malakov was taking up.

Oh And-o is sickened by both Willy and Loulabelle...but the head-office of the NHL should have dealt with this dirty deal.
HOWEVER...Lou shoulders 90% of the blame here simply because his actions equate to sabotage! Afterall, Lou was entrusted with working ON BEHALF of the owners in developing/negotiating the CBA.
Anyway...let the babies have their bottles...cause the medicine comes next!
...and say good-bye to Lou's credibility amongst his peers - And-o can live with it...if he can!?

And- O, get over it. All Bobby Clarke and Lou did was fire the first shot that is the "new NHL for GM's". Someone had to do it. And if not them, it would have been another GM (except Bob "I am more conservative than Stephen Harper" Gainey. He would not want to upset anyone.
As the teenagers say..don't blame the playah, blame the game. I said when this cap system was implemented that GM's would need to be more innovative and they are. YOu don't think that Bob Gainey does not owe the Av's GM a favour down the road for taking Theo and his overinflated salary off his hands?!?? Gainey will wait for the dust to settle and slide him a draft pick or give them a player that leaves us all shaking our heads. The difference is that it will be much less obvious than what Lou and Clarkey pulled.
