Huet and Aebischer will be ready to start the Season

Roland Melanson maintains that both goalies Huet and Aebischer will be ready to undertake the season despite their poor pre-season games.

"We weren't expecting to see our goalies in playoff form. That is why we have a training camp. Its true that they allowed some weak goals, but thats part of the process" Melanson added.

"I would be worried if they were 21-22 yrs. of age. But we are talking about 2 experienced goaltenders, 2 atheletes with character. They know what it takes to prepare well for the season. They are working hard and will be ready for Friday's game in Buffalo. I have absolute confidence in them " said Carbonneau.

Melanson also feels that these 2 goalies have ideal personalities to play this position. "They are very relaxed. They only have to remain that way. They can't get upset about a bad goal or a bad period. Its important that they remain relaxed. If they do, they will be alright."

A Healthy Competion

Melanson sees from a competitive point of view that Huet and Aebischer will battle each other for the number one position. " Their performances will decide everything. We have two goalies that want to play and victories will determine their utilization."

Melanson reminds us that the Canadiens will need these two goalies. We will be playing 2 games in as many nights and three games in four nights, thus it is important to be able to rely on two goalies who can be victorious.

We may think that Huet will start against the Sabres on opening night. " Carbo will decide that," reminds Melanson.

Question Marks Elsewhere

The Canadiens are not the only team in their Division that raises questions about their goaltending. The Sénators, Boston, the Leafs and even Buffalo could have a few bad surprises.

In Ottawa, the Sénators have given the number one position to Gerber, seconded by Emery. Its yet to be seen if the x-goalie from Carolina has over come his problems from the Playoffs.

In  Boston, the Bruins are calling on Tim Thomas and Hannu Toivonen, two goalies who have only 62 games between them in the NHL.

In Toronto, the Maple Leafs have their fingers crossed that Andrew Raycroft rediscovers his abilities which won him the Calder Trophy. Jean-Sébastien Aubin et Mikael Tellqvist are his back-ups.

And lastly in Buffalo, the Sabres are coming back with Ryan Miller who was the best rookie goalie of the year. The question is can he repeat last seasons exploits with his back-up Martin Biron.

"I don't concern myself with other goaltenders. My job is to ensure that our goalies are ready for the season," said Melanson.

About the only team in the East that does not have question marks in goal (and yes that includes the habs) is Jersey. Th eteams that get solid goaltending all year could be the ones that rise to the top.

And even Jersey got some surprisingly spotty goaltending last year.
