Pens sign Staal
Permalink Closed

So it seems that the Habs arent the only team signing players with hunior elegability.

The penguins anounced that they have signed centre Joran Staal to an entry level contract. They have also annouced he will start the season in the lineup.

This now give the Penguins 3 potenchal top line centres: Crosby, Malkin and Staal. Since Malkin is still injured (although he started skating again the other day), it is expected that Staal will centre the 2nd line behind Crosby. However what happens once Malkin is back? The pens have 9 games till the contract year kicks in so the problem might be a simple fix, but what if Staal is playing well???

I have been arguing with people who keep talking abuot how the Habs need a centre, saying that there are none out there that are available, however, with this signing I can see the Habs trying to make a move for one of the big boys behind the phenom (Malkin - 6'3, Staal 6'4).

I do not want to make the mistake of people thinking that I am saying this will happen, however if will definatly be on my chirstmas list....

There were rumours that Gainey was going after Malkin earlier on in the offseason, what do you guys think of one of these boys wearing the CH, and which would you rather have?

I would rather have Malkin, no doubt about it. He is a franchise player whereas Staal is projected to be a number one centre. That being said, if we ended up with Staal I would still be smiling for a month (provided we did't trade our entire team to get him that is).

Can't see it happening either way.
