Jersey is in salary cap trouble, the Habs have an abundance of young (potentially good) inexpensive prospects, these two teams could help each other out through a trade. Even if Lamerillo gets salary cap relief for Mogilny, it would appear he will have to take on Malakov' salary and of course he has yet tosign Gionta,Hale,Martin and Clemmenson which will put him well over the salary cap level. Obviously Julien is very familiar with the Habs prospects that could contribute for Jersey. The Habs still are approximately 1.5 million below the cap level, and trading the likes of a Perez or Kositisyn would shave another 700,000 off payroll allowing for greater flexibilty in perhaps acquiring a Rafalski, a great mobile puck moving dman that would go along way to upgrading the Habs. A major deal within the same conference is not likely, nor does it seem in Gainey's personality to push for this sort of deal, but it sure would help. At the end of the day no matter how he tries to control the damage Lamerillo is going to have to shed payroll and trade an established quality player for prospects, the Habs are as deep as anyone in that area, so why not us?
Doesn't Rafalski make 3 or 4 mils. In order to do this, we'd have to send a couple of players out. If we take on 4 mils in salary, we'd have to send another 3 the other way, which helps NJ but not enough. I think NJ would look to deal with someone who has a good amount of cap room. The Habs don't have that much room, and I doubt Gainey wants to get too much closer to the cap in case injuries hit, or if we need to get a high priced rental in March.
It's nice to dream about all the other teams good players plying for the Habs, but at this point, those are just dreams.
