September 23, 2006 Blind spot may force Koivu's hand
Veteran hockey scribe Red Fisher believes that at this point in Saku Koivu's career the Finnish international should do what is best for him and his family, even if it means retiring.
Fisher's latest column in the Montreal Gazette points out that the small cataract in Koivu's eye -- which will require surgery at some point -- means the captain will play the season with a permanent blind spot.
"It's not a good feeling," Koivu said. "You worry about it. But it's not cancer."
Koivu has looked good in pre-season and scrimmage, but playing with less than 100-per-cent vision is a dangerous proposition in the new 'speed first' NHL.
"When you talk about cancer ... OK, you might lose your battle and you're not going to live. If you're cut, you get a few stitches and come back to play. With an injury like this, you may have to retire ... not play hockey again. But I can play with my kid. I can go outside and have a good time with my family."

I walked past a restaurant yesterday that had a sign in the window that said, "Lobster Tail and Beer." I went in, since I enjoy all three.
Very stupid article, especially considering that Koivu is having the best camp yet over all the other guys.
I expect much more from Red Fisher.
Agreed. I was disgusted when I read that. Plus the quotes from Koivu that he's using are taken out of context. He wasn't talking about his blind spot. He was talking about the injury right when it happened and the minute possibility of never playing again. I remember when he said it. Red Fisher should give his head a shake and not write an article just because he can.
And-o would like to see Saku flex his $4.75 million dollar 'C' and call-out the likes of Alexei Kovalev, Riblet and Samsonov!!!
In fact, a good old fashioned 'blown gasket' from Saku might just be what this team needs!!!
hmmmm....those two( kovalev and riblet) are fancy boys. God help us if they play like that when the regular season starts...I will not speak for Samsonov yet, I need more time to truly evaluate whether he is a gutless wonder or not...
And....And-o, I think those two could have the ghosts of hab legands pass visit them late at night and the first thing they would do is the following:
1. Kovalev...go on internet banking to make sure he still has his millions
2. Ribeiro...Slick back his hair and slip on his penny loafers...and make sure he still has his "crest whitestrips" smile...
Bottom line...if these two clowns choose not to play...ain't no one going to change that my poiny ear'd friend...pride comes from within. I fear these two have never played with pride...EVER!
Fisher still writes good bio articles, but he has been out of touch with hockey for a number of years and probably should have retired at the turn of the century. It became really clear in my mind when at the start of last season he wrote an article where he built his NHL team based on the cap, but changed all the players' salaries to what he thought they should be worth so he could fit them under the cap. It's too bad though, he and Todd were my fav columnists for many years.
