You think these guys care about the stupid, overly long, boring exhibition season?  Especially guys like Kovalev and Samsonov who've been through these for 10 years already?  Playing against 6'3 stiffs like Brad Brown - who knows what this guy would do to you with his stick or elbow to get back into the league.

Kovalev and Samsonov know exactly what their doing here.

And good on Christopher Higgins speaking up and being frustrated, but at the same time this is only his 3rd or 4th training camp - I'm sure once he gets older he'll realize what Kovy and Sammy are going through right now.

I think if Sammy and Kovy are not taking advantage of pre-season for conditioning and gaining their timing or building chemistry than they shouldn't waste the jersey. Let a couple hungry kids dress instead. If I were Carb...that's exactly what I would do...not dress them at all through all pre-season games.

In your eyes is Saks and Higgins idiots for playing hard now?

The point you are missing hkeyman is that the fact that certain players do not feel the need to put out, just because it is preseason, is simply a symptom of a far bigger illness that will come back to bite them in the ass in the regular season. Lack of pride. Higgins said it best. If you are a competitor you want to win ALL the time, irregardless of the importance of the game. Toronto WANTED to win these last 2 games more. That says alot about their dressingroom. How does Kovalev and Samsonov and others think that the poor fans felt who shelled out the same money for an exhibition game as they would a regular season game, only to see them sleepwalk their way through it? They dont care. They get paid.

As habs fans we are starting more and more to sound like Toronto fans. We are accepting lackluster efforts. We are making excuses and using "What If's". Are the refs out to get us each and every single game? Is this a league wide reffing conspiracy to "get Montreal"?

I think not. No. The time for excuses is over. The time to suck it up, get the job done is now. Higgins was absolutely right in saying it has been an embaressment. And good for him for saying so. He has won my respect.

Not everybody is cut from the same cloth.  Steve Begin is one of my favourite players in the league, not just on the Habs, because of the way he plays.

I'm just saying, Samsonov, nor Kovalev are like Koivu or Begin - - - but don't worry about these guys going through the motion in the pre-season, they'll be just fine once the regular season starts, so everybody should just relax.

Let's be honest, the NHL pre-season is a joke.  The league has ZERO TV revenue, its totally gate receipt driven, hence the reason for such a long pre-season.  And we are not in 1965 anymore, these guys show up to camp in impeccable condition, they don't need these 7 games to "get in shape".

If Kovalev gives us another lackadaisical season like last year, I expect he will be gone by the trade deadline or the draft at the latest. I think Kovalev is not the only one in that position either.

I can just about put up with the idea Kovalev isn't bothered by pre-season but surely Samsonov should be showing up with a new team?

We know what Kovalev brings but Samsonov is becoming a worry and I really wanted him on board.

But is it effort with Samsonov? Or lack of chemistry. There is a difference. Samsonov may take a few games to get into the groove.

I don't know Hkydude, explain to guys like Latendresse that the pre-season is boring and/or stupid.  There are some guys that are by all accounts are leaving it all on the ice, because all they want is a chance to play for the Habs (or any other NHL team).  And they are being shown that the line-up is set, so don't bother trying.

At the same time, I do not blame guys like Higgins one bit for being pissed and saying so. Nothing is worse than going out there, busting your butt, only to watch some of your teamates coast. Hopefully Saks will talk to some of these guys in hos role as captain and give them a wake up call!
