According to Bill Watters (former assistant GM of Maple Leafs), the New Jersey Devils or rather Lou Lamoriello has a trick up his sleeve for the apparent salary cap troubles that he is facing.  One is to drop Malakhov's salary commitment by using the disabled clause, where they aren't bound under the cap for his salary because he is no longer fit to play (Ie: he failed his physical).  He also speculates that Mogilny will voluntarily retire, negating his salary against the cap.  He mentioned a third player, that I can't remember right now, and the same idea as Mogilny.  These moves would free up about 8 million dollars under the cap.
* I wonder if Mogilny would retire (albeit with a little persuasion, you know, some dead presidents) after the way that Lamoriello treated him last year? 


Add to that Weimer and Matvichuk being on the long term injury list, and they may not need to fire sale as quickly or as much as many feel.

well i dont know if that will work , i hope it doesn't , he made his bed . as far as i know malakhov retired last year , i dont think they can drop his salary because hes not in shape , as far as mogilny goes he played in the ahl last year so if he retires i hope he gets stuck on their cap also. the league (bettman-daly) are aware of whats going on in jersey and i believe their stance is those players are on the cap. i hears daly state this in an interview months ago.

I agree Red. Although the selfish side of me would like to see Claude have a better team. Nonetheless he still feels he will have a pretty solid team even after unloading some salary and I agree. They will be strong. Hopefully he will get some young talent cheap in salary trades that will compliment the veterans.

I don't envy Claude. Even if New Jersey does well (and with their question marks, that's an accomplishment), it will just be seen as business as usual. If they fail, it will be Claude who gets the blame.
