With Bulis, Zed and Sunny gone with their combined 42 goals and Johnson and Sammy coming in with their combined 39 goals, we really need someone to step up and score some goals.
Who will it be?
Our highest paid players, Saks and Kovy had a combined 40 goals. Those two along with Ribs and Ryder will be expected to contribute more but in reality Ryder and Kovy are probably the only pure goal scorers we have. Ryder doesn't offer much else although he played injured and Kovy's 23 goals didn't exactly light the lamp like I thought, although he may of not felt like scoring more than that...who knows?
My point is...when will we finally see a player that can score goals and also play the game well at both ends of the ice? I have a feeling Higgins will be that total package kind of player. The wait is on. My thinking is we really need that kind of player now. A 30 to 40 goal man that can also pass the puck, skate and is reliable in any situation.
I hope someone surprises me and that player has Carbs total respect and trust in any situation. We really need a go to guy this season for Habs to improve on the score sheet.
Habs were 20th last season with 241 goals for but 244 goals against....ouch! That kind of scoring won't win you a championship in todays NHL.
no to nitpick but zeds and bullis only had 36 goals last year , and i feel with the addition of sammy to kovys line will raise both there goal production , and ribs will be good for a few more also . we wont get 300 this year but i feel comfortable saying we'll get 270ish. the rest of the team will be sligtly improved also as i see things .i think rsk-line will get 80 ,srh=line will get 80,jpp-line will get 40 ,bbm-line 30 and 40 from the d , that will do it .

Not to nitpick, but if you read it again it says 42 goals for Bulis, Zednik, and Sunny
we only have to look behind the bench to see that D is gonna be stressed here this year, folowed closely by skating and work ethic all of which this group will demand and instill in this years team. This will be our scoring increase along with a PP thats steady, dont have to be lights out but top 7 in the league is not unreasonable with our PP . I say 20 games in if these things are not in some of the guys vocabulary make the move for the marquee centre let some young guys fill the gaps and hope like heck Huet is for real!!!lol
and whats wrong with having 6-8 20-30 goal scorers , is spreads the offense out and makes it harder for a team to shut us down , better than being a 1 line team, imho. i would rather have our lines than what a few teams are putting on the ice .

I actually agree with that but the reality is, Habs haven't had that in the last ten years. Since the Cup in 93, Habs have never had the talent to score goals. Our talent pool is elavating and last season we only had four players break the 20 goal mark and three of them closer to 20 than 30. In todays NHL, even if you add Sammy and Saks to the list and we get 6 players hovering at 20 goals, that still may not be enough goals. You know with our Defense, it will be a struggle for Huet to keep them out ALL season long. If we score 260, that's better but with our offensive players including Sammy being shaddy defensively that means we may let in 270 goals.
Ryder-5/Kovy-1/Higgins-1/Sammy-3/Saks+1/Bulis+2 but gone. Those numbers don't win you championships.
All I'm saying is, it would be great for Carb to have a player he could trust off the bench in any situation that had the talent to score goals. Like a Brind'amour 31-39-70-+8. Not killer numbers but decent enough to make a difference.
I accept we have to score by committee because we don't have that kind of player but I hope it's enough to make a difference on the score sheet at the end of the night.
funny you should bring up brinid-a-mour . last year was his best year since 98-99 . carolina had a few players have career years last year , before last year brindy had worse numbers that koivu . hes a good player but not someone who will carry a team , just like koivu . when the talent around him is better he is better as with most players. as for our top six , they should all be able to score at least 20 this year , ribs - koivu around 20 , they are the setup men on the line, the others should all have over 25 with ryder and kovy with atleast 30 each . if we can get johnson to improve slightly he'll be around 20 also , and another kid could get there if the stars align for us as they did for some teams last year. maybe its our turn.
I agree with you Steevo. I have been hoping for a possible Daze pick-up the last couple of months. As for a guy we could put out to make a difference, that should be Kovalev. And our defense isn't all that bad. No, they will not control a game (maybe Markov), but they are quite solid defensively and physically. Our D's problem is puck movement, not defense.
