This board most likely already had this debate I'm sure, but I thought I'd ask anyway, now that we've gone through it.
I don't like the shoot out. It's not a team sport at that point. I think they should play until someone wins and reward the winning team with the points only. This way all teams will have to play offensive hockey to win the game if it goes into OT. None of this crap where they would play for the tie and go into defensive mode to get a point for it. Now with the re-enforced rules, we would see some great end-to-end hockey right to the end.
I agree with your stand on the shootout as i have posted previoulsy. TO me overtime hockey is exciting I'm ont he edge of my seat but once its over without a goal and the shootout begins i kinda slouch back into my seat and watch the rest. The energy is gone the momentum is gone. Some have argued that while some OT's are like this others are more boring, which is true but thats because some teams excel at the shootouts (Dallas) and in OT would rather play more cautious because they know that they have the extra point sewn up if it goes into a shootout. Thats why Dallas had about 12 shootouts while Montreal only had 4 if i recall the numbers correctly.
i dont like the shootout as a means of settling games , as a pure specticle it is good . as far as ot goes its good also but i dont know whats wrong with ties , if a tie happens it happens , there is nothing wrong with 2 teams being equal on a given night .

I agree with you, I have no problem with a tie either, if that's the way the game ends, so be it. But if they want to have a winner every game, you're right, a shootout shouldn't be used to settle a games. You've got to admit when a playoff game goes into overtime, and you know next goal wins, that's when hockey is at its best. Back and forth, chance after chance, and just like Superhab mention, you're on the edge of your seat, bitting your nails down to the bone, hoping your team will pull it off. And when they do, you can't wait for the next game.
The shootout is simply another product of a league president who has no idea what he is doing and has a background in basketball. He is trying to promote the game to American fans but has yet to read the memo which reads "Gary, we don't care".
Now he wants to call an overtime winner a "skate off goal". Maybe at the same time gary you can bring back the wildly popular "flaming puck" that Fox tried a few years back.

Is this true, or are you just being your witty self? If true, then Bettman is a bigger idiot than I gave him credit for.
That said, I have to admit I have no great qualms with the shootout. I find it fun to watch, and secure in the knowledge that a point is already in the bank, it's relatively stress-free.

Nilsey- even I could not come up with something as ridiculous as that..it is true..sad but true..he wants the announcers, reporters, stats men..everyone to call an overtime winner a "skate-off goal", similar to the wildly popular "walk off home run" in baseball.
But I do have a new one to add to the "skate-off" and "walk-off" terminology..how about a "f**k-off Gary"

Ties are stupid. Unlike European Football, NHL games can and should have a winner. Personally, I like the OT/shootout format as is except maybe to make the OT longer. But I have the guaranteed point. I think it was pointed out that the freebie point for OT/shootout loss really have no impact on the standings. Anyway, that's what I think.
