Another rumor has Gagne headed to the Montreal Canadiens for a package of winger Michael Ryder and perhaps another player, along with picks and/or prospects.
Gagne would undoubtedly be a big hit in Montreal and perhaps Canadiens GM Bob Gainey contacted his old buddy Clarke to inquire into Gagne's availability, but once again the salary cap comes into play.
Gainey's payroll presently sits at just over $42 million, so trading away Ryder's $2.2 million would drop him to just under $40 million, which wouldn't be enough to absorb Gagne's anticipated salary. He'd have to deal away at least another $3 million in salary to comfortably afford Gagne and still have a cap cushion throughout the season.
He could do that by sending another player with Ryder to Philly, but then that doesn't resolve Clarke's cap problem, as he'd still be paying out around $5 million except this time to perhaps two lesser players.
But what better summer past time at their expense!!!!! Nothing like a little fun and fantasy during the late days of August. Maybe one of these rumours might just happen. Not that I would like to see Ryder traded, but to get something valuable, you also have to give up value right. Ok, I'll dream on. (Kovalev scores 50 this year, Koivu plays a full injury-free season, Barry gets a Porta-Poti beside his seat at the Bell Center.........and Ribs gains 25 pounds of muscle)
Obviously Michael Ryder has become the new whipping boy!
...how many times have we fans traded him this off-season anyways!?!?!?!?
It's not that Ryder is a whipping boy or that everyone wants him traded, it's that he's one of the few players that we would actually get something in return for, and is therefore tradable. We'd all love to get rid of Bonk et al, but all we'd get would be the proverbial bag of pucks.

There was also another blog rumour re Gagne going to Montreal in a 3 way deal with Vancouver. I don't have the link right now but I think it was something like Souray, Perezogin, draft pick to Vancouver for Markus Naslund. The Habs then would trade Naslund to Philly for Gagne.
The habs payroll isnt actually $42 million. that is the payroll for 25 players, so onec they drop it down to 22 it would look more like $40 million. so It ryder was traded it would leave a little under $38 milion in space, and that IMO is enough to sign Gagne.
i would hate to see ryder go, but Gagne is great compensation...lol

I agree Nilsey. We do not have alot of tradeable commodities. Yes we have players that other teams would want. But it needs to be a combination of cap, want, and being players that we can actually do without.

If the Habs would get their hands on Naslund, I wouldn't bother with the rest of the trade and just keep him over Gagne.

where did you see that??? I read spector's all the time and I don't see it anywhere.....
He wrote in on his blog site where he expands on certain rumours. The link is somewhere on his rumour site. And I would take Gagne in a heartbeat... I am still bitter about not drafting him. Habtastic get over it, i had to get over that i wasn't drafted by HOOTERS, something about having to be female, GO FIGURE!!
