Higgins Question
Permalink Closed

For some reason, when Higging first came into the league, I remember him being listed as a center who can play wing...

is it possible that BG and Guy are planning to put him back in as a center if we need him there?

Higgins is actually a center and was drafted as a center.

He was switched when it was decided that the Canadiens didn't need another smallish center and Higgins was not up to par for his faceoffs against Pro players.

I guess the question is...

Can he be any worse then Ribs? ... and if so, can he be a viable replacement for Ribs if we pick up another winger or for Koivu if his injury keeps him out?

Something like:

Without Koivu...
Dumont\Perezhogin-Higgins-Kovalev (if we pick up another winger instead of that big defenceman)
Sammy-Ribs-Ryder (put some speed with Ribs-Ryder)

Without Ribs...
Sammy-Koivu-Kovalev
Dumont\Perez-Higging-Ryder (although I wouldn't put Ryder and Dumont on the same line)
so...
Sammy-Koivu-Ryder
Dumont\Perez-Higging-Kovalev

I mean... how much worse then Ribs can he be at center? Higgins and Kovalev I see as a better match then Ribs and Kovalev because Kovy loves to handle the puck and Ribs doesn't know what to do without it (and he always tried the same move with it anyway :)

Just throwing out some ideas...

Naz

I think anything is possible, especially if Saks gets hurt, or if Ribs falters. Certainly Higgins is stronger on the puck then Ribieor..but then again that is a bit like saying John Candy was slimmer than Rita McNeil

Although Higgins would be a better center than Ribs he would still be out of his new found element, he would be less effective and he already has such good chemistry with Ryder, and Koivu.

He was moved to Wing early in his stint with Hamilton.  The move to wing really sparked his offensive production.  He was also poor in the face-off circle before the move.

I liked the way Higgins played on the wing. It's also an easier position to play as a rookie.

You never know though. As Barry points out, anything could happen because of the uncertainty at centre. And Higgins strikes me as the kind of player who will get good at faceoffs if need be - a smart, mature, tough, all-around guy who does what it takes with a minimum of showing off.

Higgins really surprised me during the last trainning camp...but had a slump at one point...but picked up quickly during the second half...i dont get Naz...why do you include Dumout in your lines? Are you that positive BG is going to make the move or is it wishfull thinking?and i would rather see Higgins as a second center the Ribs...does anyone know if he did or is doing some trainning to get some mass? or his he clubbing and puffing the magic dragon? as i heard thru the bushes......
