Buffalo made the right choice, these arbitration awards have been really stupid this offseason. Alot of Arbitrators won't be coming back to the NHL, I can tell you that much.
Selection of Salary Arbitrators. The League and the NHLPA shall jointly appoint eight (8) Salary Arbitrators who are members of the National Academy of Arbitrators.
Thanks Fatherhab... looks like the NHLPA drafted a lot better than the owners!
As for Dumont, if we were to get him, I would think we would say good-bye to Perezhogin and it would be worth it if he could be packaged with a D or Ribs to get us an upgrade in one of those positions. This would be especially true if Dumont signed for about 2-2.2 mil. Having said that, he is essenitally (from what I can gather) a quicker, left-handed Ryder and so those of you who don't like Ryder, you probably won't like Dumont. I would also prefer that we get someone more physical and defensively responsible (as well as still a scoring threat) on that 3rd-line if we are to change Perez, and those are not Dumont qualities.
this would be a DUMB move when we are in dire need of a Dman
At any rate, there isn't the cap space available. It's been said that the Habs' salary obligations are in the neighbourhood of 42 million. Dumont was awarded $2.9 million. If any team offers Dumont 80%(I think) or less and he accepts it, the Sabres can match. So, a team wouold have to offer more than 2.32 million and the Habs don't have the room.

I know we don't have the cap space and I don't think he would be a major upgrade for our team BUT.....having said that Dumont is one of the few people who have said that he would like to play in Montreal. I got this from Spectors site......
Former Buffalo Sabres winger J.P. Dumont was disappointed yesterday when the Sabres decided to walk away from his arbitration award, making him an unrestricted free agent. Dumont said he'd be interested in signing with the Montreal Canadiens, claiming the club would be at the top of his list.
Yes its too late to sign and trade, however IF montreal were to go after him, watch for Bonk to go for like a 4th rounder....I however am not sure if JP Dumont should be a hab, he would fit the style of play in montreal, but we have too many players like him IMO.
heet i thought i read that somewhere also but i just downloaded the cba and read the section on salary arb. but didnt find that stipulation . can you find it anywhere.

I hope you meant the 80% rule, as I just spent an hour looking for it.
If a Club exercises its walk-away right, the following applies:
If the player accepts an offer from a New Club in respect of that year of the contract which the Prior Club has walked-away from that is less than 80% of the award for such year, the Prior Club may, within seven (7) days after the date it receives the applicable Offer Sheet, elect to match the offer of the New Club and the Player and the Prior Club shall enter into a Player Contract on those terms and conditions; or
