Lack of confidence in Ribeiro......
Permalink Closed

Im sorry, but i REALLY feel Ribeiro doesnt get have the credit he deserves.

The guy has consistantly been one of our tops scorers for the past couple years ( top 2 season ago and 2nd last year ) He centers the 2nd and sometimes first line and still puts up points in maybe games. The guy CAN score and has one of the best passing hands on the team ( second to Koivu ) He can skate pretty well and is relatively cheep for a guy who puts up those numbers. Also, he CONSISTANTLY plays 70+ game seasons which is rare in the NHL

Yes of course the guy has downfalls. He is soft, doesnt hit much and of course is a cry baby at time. But honestly i saw a HUGE improvement with him nearing the end of the year last year after Dagenais and Theo had left. HE is also VERY motivated about this year and WANTS to preform well.

Honestly i think ribeiro deserves another chance from a few posters here. I know he was pretty immature and did embarrass alot of people with his act in the playoffs 2 years ago, but i mean without him, we'd be in a MUCH worse situation. ( Unless he is replaced by someone better )

You said it johab...the guy has consistantly been our top center the last couple years. That is the big problem with this team that still hasn't been addressed.

In saying that though. AB did appreciate what he offered at his wages. Now though, he got a raise and needs to play up to it.

You see, Ribeiro IS good, but there IS better. And until we get better, then we wont be winning a cup. IF ribeiro continues to put up points, not get injured and mature, im positive he will be good trade bait. Because we all know Gainey cant sign free agents because no one WANTS to come to montreal. Easiest way to get top players is TRADE FOR THEM and MAKE them come here. But for now, i will settle for Ribeiro, and be happy with him. For that price, and the production ( consistantly ) gives us, i cant complain.

The fact that Bob Gainey has been shopping him around to any GM in the league who will listen for the past 2 years and yet he is still a hab says alot about Michael Ribiero.

He has a terrible Arnold Swartzeneggar impression that he does 24/7 and no one wants to listen to it so Gaineys stuck with him?

Yes it says "I could not find a center to replace him so he gets the job by process of elimination". Seriously, he was given a ONE year contract..is that a RINGING endorsement?!??

Gaineys quote on the team 990 was "Well yes we are taking a bit of a gamble on Mike Ribiero at Center this year but hopefully it is a gamble that will pay off". Get the blinders off guys. Ribs is our second center (and possibly our first if Saks cant go) this year through attrition and the process of elimination. Even our GM does not have  any confidence in him. If he did, he would have gotten more than a one year deal. The hope is that Ribs will finally wake the hell up and realize he has to actually pay the price to stay in the top hockey league in the world. Therein lies "the gamble".

Hopefully he loses the punk ass attitude.i.e."Guy Garbonneau is not my Daddy"....  Then I will be willing to give him the benefit.  Maybe Carbo should take him out behind the woodshed and give hin a tuning!!!!

Hahahahahahaha....

That's pretty funny AB.

I would say Ribeiro was our third best centre last year, but Bonk did give him a run for his money at the end for that third spot.

As for three years ago, Ribeiro narrowly beat out Saku in points during the regular season, but that was far from making him the top centre, as his brilliant playoff performance proved.

Even Saku-lover And-o probably wouldn't deny that Saku Koivu has easily been our best centre over the past two seasons.

You had me until that last line, plouf.  And-o would not admit that Saku was our best centreman, nor will he admit that there's even a chance that he's still injured.  For all our sakes, I hope he's right on that second thing.............

Actually Nil, I think And-o would admit that Saku has been our best centreman. But he would also add some barbed things like the following:

-which tells you how bad the situation is

-but he's barely better than the likes of Ribeiro

-and he's not even a legitimate number one centre

etc....

(correct me if I'm wrong And-o)

And-o's gone into hiding, it seems.  Or on vacation.  But he wouldn't have to go far to get his head in the sand.

And-o did not respond initially because...quite simply...you were not wrong...and you did say "correct me if I'm wrong And-o"!!!

In fact...those responses were/are SPOT-ON!

Why ask silly questions like that???  Maybe Fig and Jay can handle this one.....if they collaborate!!!

Ever since the flopping around the ice incident, I have been a Ribeiro detractor.  However, I also think he has the tools to excel in this league.  He has great vision, can pass like few others and I saw him go and find open spots for himself in the offensive zone last year.  Yes, his defense needs to pick up, but, (sorry rwp2le ) Kovalev isn't exactly going to win the Selke any time soon either.  This is a goal scoring league now.  Alot of talk about how his attitude needs to change, but does it?  What does the clothes he wears have anything to do with how he plays hockey?  Our very own barry-o () even said that CJ thought that Ribeiro was one of the hardest working guys in practices.

So I guess hope springs eternal, and all the other cliches about a new season coming up, and I'm not going to trash him.  I'll give him a couple of games for that .

I would settle for the Maurice Richard award, or the Conn Smythe   No worries, although I don't think he is our worst defensive forward

Good response to Johab. Sounds good to me! I'm not changing a thing. It continues to be the problem. Whatever floats your boat but we can argue forever on who has been number one the past two seasons. Ribs out produced Saks a couple seasons ago and Saks out produced Ribs last season but Ribs still managed first line center roll due to Saks inconsistensy and burn out near the end.

My point is, as long as there is no clear cut first line center, Habs won't take the next step and go all the way.
