Ya know, there are still quite a few players that would really add value to any team. Many of these guys may now seem like bargains!
Just for example, Anson Carter (who made $1 million last year) is still kicking around…and so is Travis Green ($650K last year). Also, in terms of d-men, Cale Hulse, Radaslov Suchy and Dick Tarnstrom are all fairly mobile guys who likely fall in the $1-$1.25 million range.
Just compare the guys above to other signings…and it makes you wonder how many GM’s keep their jobs!!! How about Mark Recchi getting $2.28 million from Pittsburgh (are you telling And-o that Hulse AND Carter would not be a smarter move)??? What about the Islanders giving Mike Sillinger $2.2 million a season (some many other comparables are cheaper)? And…don’t get And-o started about Mike Riblet’s deal (which just confirms that Ribby operates several hidden camera’s in various locations throughout Montreal)!
In the end…obviously the arbitration process continues to over-inflate the fair market value of all player types…but the GM’s are still overpaying many players, which is only making things worse!
And-o predicts that the NHLPA will self-destruct by the end of this deal…because there is no “middle class” players…..just the super rich and the $450K club!
Well Barry…And-o thinks that Bob (and most other GM’s) all need to re-evaluate their options right now before camps start.
For example, Gainey could ask himself honestly whether going with a 1A and 1B system of goalkeeping is practical in this league…or would trading one of either Abby or Huet and promoting Danis while signing another mobile defender with those $$$ make more sense overall?!?!?
And-o just doesn’t see the big logic in playing a 1A for 50-60 games…with a similarly paid 1B getting the other 20-30 games…..especially while the PP weathers the ups-and-downs associated with having only one or two guys capable of running the show consistently (not to mention just logging the nightly 60 minutes of ice-time without the usual “Mayday” free-for-all that has come to typify Hab hockey over the past decade at times…especially with inevitable injuries).
Carter may have only made 1 million (yeah, ONLY, I wish I ONLY made a million), but you know he is looking for a big raise.
But you bring up a good point about Abby. Detroit has publicly stated that they are looking for a netminder. However, Ando, would it not make more sense to wait a month or two into the season to get something back for him? Right now, I can't see the Habs getting any more than a second or third round pick for him. Not because that's all he's worth, but rather, other GM's in this league can see how close the Canadiens are to capping out and they can recognize a salary dump. If BG waits until the season is a couple of months old, he may then have some bargaining power.
And, again I agree with you on the need to revamp arbitration.

Well, instead of letting Riblet have a blank cheque…and, since Bob Gainey did not upgrade the centre slot AT ALL…And-o have bumped up Plekanec to the #2 slot…and hired a Travis Green type to either take Pleks spot in the order (and/or spot him on the wing).
The result would have been ANOTHER $1.2 million savings (approx)…and…REALLY???...what would the Habs have given up with such a move???
In fact…they would have even more grit…better face-offs…cheaper…faster…slightly older overall…more experienced!

So it's more of a what could have been, not what might be.
Hey, there's still time to trade some salary away and free up cap space.

If last year is any indication, having a 1B goalie kicking around late in the season is worth a lot. Either A) you get two options when figuring out the hot goalie come playoff time, or B) you get something for the guy when people are desperate later in the season.
That was a good signing (Aebischer).
Now, as for the fact that we are hitting cap levels, I blame the Ribeiro signing too. Why oh why? Gainey's offseason: B or B- so far. I'm not overly impressed.
But I have faith in the overall plan of building conservatively for now. And I still have faith in Bob.
And-o arbitration is driving up salaries, but the main problem with this is GM's who cannot control spending. One ludacris contract will set a precedent in arbitration and cause all the players similar to the guy who got the one bad contract to net similar deals.
One bad deal causes all the problems. The GMs could limit the arbitration awards by limiting the outrageous deals that they have given.
