The Cap

After the Ryder signing, we now have 22 players under NHL contracts. Now this does not include guys like Danis who are on 2 way contracts and will not count against the cap because they will be in Hamilton. Sooo...

22 Players- $41.548 Million

So Gainey is either in a position to stand pat and save a bit for the trade deadline or trade players with low salaries to a cap starved team in exchange for high priced talent. I am still hoping for a center for the donut.

We've been talking a lot about the need for a centre, since i don't know my way about the NHL like you guys, I was just wondering, which players are we talking about. Who do we want, who is available, etc, etc

We will find out soon enough as to who is available, as there should be some re-shuffling after arbitration.

You need to add anywhere from 450,000 to 800,000 to that number.  That number is for 22 NHL contracts.  Roster size is 23.  One rookie will make the team.  His NHL salary will need to be added.

That is a good point. ActuallY I tend to agree with one of the other posters. With so many rookies looking for a spot, and the addition of Johnson,  I do not think we can afford the "luxury" of having both Murray and Downey on the roster. I would not be susprised to see one of those guys go in a trade for a draft pick to free up cap space.

I think both Murray and Downey are useful.  But it will be very rare that both are in the lineup.  Murray is young and I think he has a little bit better skating and two way game than Downey so I think he will be in the lineup on the fourth line with Bonk and Begin.  Downey will be pressbox bound, unless we play a team with a lot of Goons, or there are injuries on the fourth line.

Yup, 2 extra forwards, one extra D. I think Murray will get a line-up spot and then Downey and maybe a Ferland will be our extras. 42 mil. Of course, I expect that Aebischer will be traded, which is 2 mil and maybe Bonk which is about 2.3 mil. I am hoping we can pick up a guy like Woywitka (D prospect who is about NHL ready) from a St. Louis for Aeb, or at least something similar. Bonk is rumoured to Washington for a pick so that they can reach the cap floor.

You need to remember from the later part of last season that Murray became part of the top four forwards for penalty killing so he should definitely be part of the opening day roster unless he has a bad training camp........
