Trivia: Leaf/Habs trade

In the 70s the Leafs and Habs traded a player to each other (1 for 1) in the off season but neither player reported to their new club - both started the season as teammates on a 3rd club.


Who were the players and where did they land as teammates?

Larry Pleau almost fits this, but I don't think he was traded 1 for 1.

Nope.  He was claimed in the inter-league draft.

How does a team "eventually" become an expansion team?  Aren't they an expansion team right from the start?

I believe that the players traded for each other jumped to The WHA (third club) and eventually that team joined the NHL a few years later - Whalers?

Habs traded Larry Pleau to Leafs for Brad Selwood - Pleau and Selwood both jumped to the WHAs New England Whalers who eventually came to the NHL as the Hartford Whalers.

And that's how a team eventually becomes an expansion club!  I should have figured that one out. Good thread, Cleghorn!
