Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced Wednesday the acquisition of forward Mike Johnson from the Phoenix Coyotes for the Canadiens' 4th round draft pick in 2007 as well as the trade of right-winger Richard Zednik to the Washington Capitals in return for the Capitals' 3rd round draft pick in 2007.
Johnson, 31, ended the 2005-06 season, his ninth in the NHL, with a total of 54 points in 80 games (16 goals, 38 assists), 50 penalty minutes and a plus-7 plus/minus rating. The native of Scarborough, Ontario, ranked 2nd with the Coyotes in assists, 5th in goals, 4th in points and 3rd in plus/minus. He completed the season with 11 multiple-point games and had a five-game point streak (one goal, seven assists), between March 25 and April 3.
Johnson, a 6'2'', 201-pound right-winger, has played in 560 NHL games with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Coyotes. He recorded 116 goals and added 223 assists for a total of 339 points, with 267 penalty minutes and a plus/minus rating of plus-32. He enjoyed his most productive season in 2002-03 with the Coyotes when he collected 63 points, including 23 goals, in 82 games.
During his five seasons with the Canadiens, Zednik scored 98 goals and added 85 assists for a total of 183 points in 322 games.
We lose a 3rd rounder...gain a 2nd rounder...save $500K...provide Johnson with a change of scenary....add a rare right handed shot...and land a guy capable of playing centre in any situation.
Not the BIG move we all hope for.....but certainly this makes sense!!!
Sounds like a winner to me. Zednik sucked last year. Sure, he's got the potential to rebound and I hope he does, but we needed to make a move, and I think Gainey did the right thing. Let's just hope Johnson has a good year in Montreal and doesn't remind us all of some of Gainey's bad trades, like for Bonk (Huet aside).
Not bad gang! We lose a 3rd rounder...gain a 2nd rounder...save $500K...provide Johnson with a change of scenary....add a rare right handed shot...and land a guy capable of playing centre in any situation. Not the BIG move we all hope for.....but certainly this makes sense!!! And-o is happy! You???
Johnson is a winger.
Edit:j Primarily a winger but can play some centre. Maybe thats the plan with Ribs on his way out if he does nothing after 20 games or so.
Mike Johnson is Riberio soft physically. That's not an exageration either. I watched him quite a bit here in Toronto, and play pick up with him during the summer. He can fly, he's got great wheels - - but he is real SOFT, that is my only concern. When Zednik was on his game, he was a Mid-Tier power forward on the walls with his leg strength.
I personally think it is a bad move. We are weak on the left side, not the right. Way to go Bob, another 3rd or 4th liner added. I am not so happy about this one.
We lost a 4th and gained a 3rd along with cash. Johnson also plays Center. I wrote early last season about acquiring him, as we needed a defensive guy who could play right-wing and take d-zone face-offs. Johnson can also score, as his 54pts proves. He should fit very nicely beside Plekanec and will do well on specialty teams. Solid move!
Could this be "the big news" that rwp2le had read about??? Sounds pretty good to me too And-o. I was never a huge fan of Zednik's. I mean, he wasn't awful or anything... just didn't like him much.-- Edited by MC Girl at 18:58, 2006-07-12
The Big News I read about looked as if it was Abby for Robert Lang. It was said that Gainey wants to reunite Lang and Kovalev.
"I had some really good years in Washington in the beginning of my career," Zednik said. "And now I'm excited to come back as a veteran."
"It's certainly going to be much different than Phoenix," Johnson said. "And that's a good thing.
"I'm looking forward to playing where people are passionate about their team and care about how the team's doing. I'm excited to be back in a hockey town."
"Montreal was interesting to me from day one," Samsonov said. "Montreal is a team with a deep tradition."
