Top 8 in the East

Ok., No wthat the dust is almost settled, lets put a very early prediction on what you think the East will shape up like this year. I sort of did it in another post. I feel that these teams are a lock to make the playoffs. Ottawa, Jersey, Buffalo, Rangers, Philly, Carolina. Those are your top 6 spots guaranteed. Even with a bit of cap problems some of those teams have they still have not suffered huge losses and will make the playoffs.

Which brings us to 2 spots basically. 7 and 8. In my mind, these are the teams that will fight for those 2 spots:

Islanders- Ted Nolan as coach, more stability, and some key signings. I say the Island will grab a spot..maybe too much time in the sun today.

Tampa- will all depend on if Marc Denis is the answer to their 'tending woes.

Toronto- still a dark horse. But if Raycroft comes back to form and with the coaching of Paul Maurice they may do it. Dont forget they missed by 3 points last year

Habs- will be in tough without a Center, unless "Hulk Ribiero's" weight program turns him into a real NHL player and Saks is actually able to play 84 games.

Atlanta- the one team that I do not feel, aside from Montreal, has improved their team this year. They will struggle I feel

Pens- a team of the future and still a couple of years away, even with Malkon. Not mentioning Therrien as a coach..Pffft.

Johnny- what has Carolina done or not done that makes you think they will go from Cup Champions to missing the playoffs?

I kind of see it a little different. Ottawa's not going to be as good this year. I think the standings will look more like this:

1) Buffalo
2) New Jersey
3) Carolina
4) Ottawa
5) Montreal
6) Rangers
7) Philadelphia
8) Boston

Glad to see the habs optomism!! 4th or 5th may be a stretch with what we have now but hey lets go for it!!! I just do not see the Rangers (who really have lost no one noticebale and have Shanny) or Tampa being out of it...we are gonna be in tough.

Carolina had a lot of things go right for them this year. They kinda had the year the Habs had in '93. I think they are gonna be in tough next year and am pretty sure they will be out of playoff contention. Gerber got em to the playoffs and Ward kept em going. Ward is young and still has a lot to learn. They also lost a lot of players in the offseason. I believe they will be battling but will run out of gas at the end.

Montreal is pretty much the same team that made it to #7. I think it's pretty easy to say the team has already gel'd and will do more gel'ing in 06/07.

The Havlat deal shows me there is still too much evening out to do before I can pick standings, but I agree with John that the loss of players and the Cup hangover might do Carolina in.
