The Montreal Canadiens announced Thursday that the club has re-signed centre Mike Ribeiro and defenceman Jean-Philippe Cote to one-year contracts.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Ribeiro, 26, earned $1.178 million US in 2005-06 and became a restricted free agent on Saturday.

A second-round pick in 1998, Ribeiro had a breakout season in 2003-04, collecting 20 goals and 45 assists in 81 games. Ribeiro scored 16 goals and 51 points last season.

In 276 career games, the Montreal native has 50 goals and 153 career points.

Its okay, your thread title is a little more direct, whereas mine was sorta intentionally misleading.

There are 2 prevailing thoughts on this - Bob's setting up to trade Or we made a boo-boo. I know everyone hates Ribs, but I think a 1 yr deal is fair. He is now in a contract year, knows his NHL future is up to him and needs to step it up OR ELSE.

Great observation, Habtastic!

I even heard Ribeiro saying on TSN that a one-year deal was good for him, as he would have a chance to have a great year and improve his bargaining power for this time next year.  He had me fooled there!  I didn't stop to think that he was in exactly this position last year, and had a sucky year nonetheless!

I'm still glad to hear him talk of being motivated to have a big year, but the proof of that will be on the ice.............. or not!

its official boob gainey is now officially a moron. 1.9 for ribs ,please , cant he ever get someone without overpaying , huet was close but 1 for 10 isnt a good average . it looks like we are stuck with him as our num. 2 center , noone will take him at that price , and to boot next year he will be a rfa again and gainey will have to qualify him at 1.9 . cant gainey play hardball with anyone , tell ribs to sign the 1.1 qualifier this year or sit , its not as if he is going to help us . i guess he'll play hardball with ryder and piss him off to the extent he'll want to leave asap. gainey is not looking good to me anymore , he is riding his rep and the ride is getting bumpy.
