Carbo was interviewed on a french radio station today, and he had the following comments: 1) improvements to the team will likely come through trades. In addition the Habs are targeting teams they believe will be in cap trouble before the season starts, and that the Habs can target some of the club's good players for trade. 2) taxes and the pressure pf playing in Montreal acts as a deterent for signing ufa's. 3) Carbo stated that he felt the team has a good base and that even if no moves are made the team will be better next season. 4) one player from the Habs original ufa shopping list remains available. ( Could that be Sykora, Shanahan, Samsonov ?)
Obviously Gainey still calls all the shots, and Carbo may not be in the total loop when it comes to the front office strategy, but it appears that the Habs will not acquire immediate help through a ufa signing. Best hope is that Gainey can position the team to take advantage of a team in cap trouble and make a good trade later this summer. We can only hope!!!
Number one. I fail to see how the team will be better than it was last year if no changes are made. We are still horrible down the middle with a suspect defense. But even if we ARE better (and it will be marginally so if we are), the other teams in our division are significantly better than they were last year. Guaranteed that Boston will not be missing the PLayoffs next year nor will Toronto (yes I am serious). Where does that leave Montreal if we stand pat with what we have?

I think we will see big years from the likes of Higgins/Perez/Plekanec/and even a suprise rookie this year...not sure who but...
You know...this team gave carolina all they could handle. The only reason Montreal lost was the Koivu injury. Makes you wonder that perhaps Montreal was puuling all the ingredients together back then?

Don't disagree with your assesment of the Habs as currently constructed only being marginally improved over last season. The Habs were somewhere around 21st in the league in scoring, and without resigning Bulis, another 20 goals is lost. Perhaps, one of the younger players will pull up the slack, but lets be honest this team needs an infusion of various qualities to become a more solid contender. Nonetheless, some of the long term and high price contracts that some teams have given some very ordinary free agents could come back to haunt them, when their teams budgets over shoot the salary cap. Not sure Marc Savard is worth 20 million over 5 years, or even Kubina ( a defenceman that has a lot of positive attributes) being worth approximately the same amount. In htis new salary cap era, fiscal flexibility will be a big advantage, and hopefully Gainey can use it to his advantage.

Easy, the team has one more year of expeirence under their belt, and the majority have played a full season together, which helps.
true, "the stick under the shield / no call!!!!! But the biggest thing was NOT HAVING "TWO" CENTERS ON THE ICE, LOST THE DRAW AND THE SERIES! THINK BACK TO "02" COULD HAVE PUT THEM AWAY, BUT OUR COACH LEFT THE BEST F-OFF MAN THE BENCH ! LOVE YOU BEGIN< BUT WHAT WAS THE STAFF THNKING ON THAT ONE! WE LET THOSE CANES OUT OF HERE AGAIN AND THIS TIME THEY PULLED IT OFF> F-OFF CANES!!!!!
That's the spirit. The Hurricanes are the first cup-winning team I've truly despised since the Rangers of 94. And even then I'm not so sure the Rangers could compete: at least they had Messier and a few other great ones. Carolina? They have Justin Williams, Doug Weight, Rod Brind'Amour, ....
