MONTREAL GAZETTE: Pat Hickey reports Canadiens GM Bob Gainey may be having a tough time convincing UFA players to sign with the club. Hickey suggests "High taxes, political uncertainty, the language question and English schools, which are closed to some" work against the Habs attracting free agents.

Spector's Note: This has been the answer I've given to Canadiens fans that write in wondering why I have doubts every year over the Habs landing marquee free agent talent. Every year thus far, I've been proven right. Looks like the Canadiens will have to continue building the old fashioned way, via trades and through the draft.

Yup, Spector is usually bang on with his assesments.

I was just thinking of a possible trade.

To Detroit: Aebischer, Zednik, Ribiero.

To Montreal: Lang and one of their many center prospects.

Detroit fills their needs and dumps salary, and we get the right-shooting top-two center we need. Lang is a UFA after this season and if he doesn't work out, he is gone. Maybe we can get a conditional pick in case we don't sign him.

Lang might look good between Perez and Kovalev.

Those who doubted it need look no further than a reputable guy like Pat Hickey.

The barriers in the mine field called "Quebec" are just too severe nowadays. Why subject yourself and your family to unwarrented scrutiny?

Especially when 10-15 other teams come a knockin'...

And it's one thing with a hockey team that employs 50 people, but another when big companies are getting tired of it...

Fourth floor - self-digging holes, men's accessories, kerchiefs...
