Habs hold on to Huet Netminder led the NHL in save percentage in 2005-06 (06/25/2006) Cristobal Huet recorded seven shutouts in 36 starts in 2005-06, second-best in the league.
PRESS RELEASE
MONTREAL - Canadiens GM Bob Gainey announced Monday the signing of goaltender Cristobal Huet to a two-year contract (2006-07, 2007-08). As per club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"Cristobal Huet is a very valuable player to the Canadiens’ organization. Last season, he led our team to a playoff berth, and more importantly, his playoff performances showed that he is amongst the top goaltenders in the NHL. We know that Cristobal likes the city of Montreal, we were convinced he wanted to stay with the Canadiens, and we are pleased to have him under contract for the next two seasons," said Gainey.
Huet, 30, completed the 2005-06 season, his third in the NHL, with a record of 18 wins, 11 losses and 4 overtime losses. He established career highs in wins (18) and shutouts (7).
A native of St-Martin d’Heres, in France, Huet won the 2005-06 Roger Crozier Saving Grace Award for the NHL’s best save percentage (.929). He ranked fourth in the league with a 2.20 goals against average, and second in shutouts (7). Huet was named the Canadiens’ candidate for the Bill-Masterton Memorial Trophy, awarded to the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.
Huet was acquired by the Canadiens on June 26, 2004 from the Los Angeles Kings with Radek Bonk, in return for Mathieu Garon and a 3rd round selection in 2004.
See...Bob cant screw EVERYTHING up! He got Huet signed, and im sure for a good price. He will make more in his second year than he will this year, and im guessing its around 5.2 million over the 2 years

I love this "club policy" about not disclosing salary terms. Aren't these public knowledge? I see lists published on web sites for every player in the league.
Why not just say it up front?

our Payroll is exactly at $29.000.100 Thats not counting Downey, Murray and streit contract. Dont you think we have more than enough spending room to attract big UFA's ??? Given we still have to sign some of our remaining players ( Ryder and Cube), we should be able to hand out some cash to a least 2 GOOD players!
In my opinion, Gainey continues to show a penchant for overpaying..he overpaid Koivu, he overpaid Theo, and I think he overpaid Huet...but hey, at least Huet did not ask for 3 years and a no trade clause

Wow does this make me happy. Looks as if we have about 28 million tied up in 13 skaters and 1 goalie. So we still have roughly 16 million to resign our rfa's and go after some ufas. Seems like we are in pretty good shape.
I don't think its too steep, I think its the right price and PERFECT time, if he bombs out then we only have him for 2 years. Maybe less. And his price tag isn't huge.
I can't see how people think we overpaid. Under 3 million for probably the best goaltender available (Roloson excluded). Now it gives us the option to package Abby and Zednik for something good. At least I hope something good, no Bellows for Bureau trade.

Gainey has no choice. Montreal plays in the HIGHEST tax market in all of the NHL. There's a price to pay for wanting players to play here. When you compete with teams in Florida whereby players are exempt from paying state taxes, Gainey has to to give more to entice players to play here.
Right on Mario. Every contract seems like an overpayment, but it is due to the Quebec tax situation. Agents want more from Montreal because if the offers are equal then a player in Montreal actually makes less.
When you consider that he was our best player last season, I think that's a fair contract.
I was worried Gainey would throw Theo type dollars at him. Good to see that he learned by his mistake and didn't cave in to Montreal media and fan pressure. Also really helped that Huet wanted to stay a Hab. Gainey had bargaining power.
Also, Huet is a bigger and better goalie than Theo.
AB is happy. If Huet doesn't show the same form than we're not stuck with him for long term.
In 2 years we should know exactly where Danis and Price stand in the organization. Perfect length and money. Way to go Bob! Now about that deadweight and UFAs...

Thanks Mario- an excellant point that I overlooked. However I do stand pat in saying that Theo was grossly overpaid, but thankfully Gainey found a brain dead GM to take him off his hands.
