Is Bob Competent?

I know Lou Lamoriello is competent

He's hired CJ and put together several great teams. I trust he knows what he's doing.

Where does that leave Bob, who acts like he knows what's going on, but has proved almost nothing so far?

Didn't dallas win the cup with him as GM?  Sounds reasonably competent to me.

I can be patient a little longer.  Come September we will have a much better indication of what is happening with this team.

I've been stating that he's average based on the last three seasons here but we'll see after this off season if he can play with the big boys.

I know, Ab Habman we disagree with Gainey's record as gm, but I do agree with you that this offseason will go a long way in determining his value. Gainey comes into the offseason with a certain degree of financial flexibility (presuming Gillette gives him the green light to increase the payroll) and there are some quality ufa's available. He has had the benefit of coaching the team and recognizing the limitations the team at present has and the areas that need to be improved. Let's hope he drafts and trades well and can make a substantial impact in the free agency market!

brooky , i dont know if lou is anymore competent than bg. he had a very high payroll when he won those cups , he rode a trap team and the best goalie in the game for as long as he could , then the cap comes in and he looses his best 2 d-men , so he overpays for malahov , mcgillis , and mogilny . now hes right against the cap and has to sign gionta , elias and langebrunner . he had some winning teams but i never found him to be the genius hes made out to be . thanks but untill boob does something really stupid (he's getting close -signing striet for 2 years ) ill stick with bg.

Slightly off-topic, but does anyone else think that Lou Lamoriello looks like Jacques Lemaire?  (A slightly older version, but the same general look.)

I certainly agree that this is the Summer that Gainey proves himself. He is a tentative GM in a go go go market and with all the changes to the NHL he has been trying out little things here and there to see what works... enough testing the water; time to take the plunge!

Well in the past his supporters have been able to say that he inherited a mess from his predecessors. Certainly he has now had time to put his own stamp on the team and this summer will say alot. I will say one thing. He does not do things the easy way. He could have hired a seasoned NHL coach to replace Julien (maybe a Crawford or Nolan) but chose instead to take a chance on Carbo. He does things hi sown way without fear of being second guessed.

That's my big fear: He hires cronies so his decisions don't get challenged before it's too late.

I leave you photographic evidence of the results of this strategy:
