Do We/Did We UNDERESTIMATE The Habs?
Permalink Closed

After reading the article on RDS' web-site, I must admit that I am suprised.

The Gm of the Canes, Jim Rutherford, stated that the Habs are the best team of the 6 teams eliminated thus far in the East. He says that he does not want to disrespect Ottawa, NJ, or Philly but he thinks Montreal could of gone far in the playoffs if they would of won the series against the Canes.

What's fascinating is that Eric Staal totally agrees with his GM...he says it was a war every night and all the games were decided by one goal except the first, when the Habs dominated them.

IMO...compliments are good but beating them would of been much better...

It just goes to show you that this team is destined for great things. We have a good core of players who are still developing and should be a lot better next year. With a few key aquisitions, I don't see why we can't finish in the top 4 in the conference next year and hopefully have a little more playoff success.

I agree AND the Habs organization better get used to the higher expectations that everyone has for next season...no more excuses

I was just thinking that to myself these past couple days. Montreal gave Carolina a MUCH bigger fight that New Jersey did. Montreal killed them 6-1 in the 1st game...6-5 in the second in a very hard fought game and then fell victim to hot goaltending in 4 straight 1 goal games that EASILY could have gone our way ( not to mention all the bloody posts we hit ) Carolina lucked out of that series really...and that is why they are playing like there is no tomorrow right now. Personally...i want Carolina to lose...they took out our habs...and therefor should be slaughtered....BUT...i do respect Brind-amour...what a machine that guy is!! A true leader.

i would actually like to see the canes go far  but that might be cuz of staal  (a fellow T Bay man)  and i would like to think that if the habs got beat  they were beat by the best team  not a team who goes out in the second round    thats why last season  the Tampa bay lose was a lot easier to take after they won the cup    in other words we lost to the champs  which is easier than we lost to some team who couldn't win afterwards  ya know?

When Tampa Bay won the Cup it was the first time that The Habs were eliminated in the playoffs by the eventual Stanley Cup winners in the past if you knocked the habs out of the playoffs you did not win the cup......(unless it was the final round of course)

How can that be?  Back in the six-team league, with only four teams in the playoffs, that must have happenned all the time (statistically, it would have happened 50% of the times the Habs did not win the Cup).  Plus any time they lost in the final - like they did to Calgary in 1989, e.g. - but I guess you mention that occurrence.........

Nil d - I read that particular stat in The Gazette I think on this website after the Tampa series - I believe it was either written by Jack Todd or Red Fisher not that I went back and checked past Habs losses in the playoffs.....

"The Curse of the Habs" was lifted when TB knocked out the Habs and won the cup.  Prior to that, any team beat the Habs in a playoff round had never won the cup.

Since what year?  Surely in the Original Six days, that happened occasionally.

I believe it was since the NHL expanded from 6 teams.
