PLEKANEC

Did any of you catch the game today between Canada and Czech? After seeing Plekanec play today, it reassures me that he will, no doubt, be a top 2nd center for several years in the NHL. I know that the talent level isn't like other international tournaments but for him to be a stand out player like he was today confirms that this guy is ready to take it to the next level.

There's been so much talk lately about acquiring that no #1 center, but what if many of you are right about having our centers being Koivu, Pleks, Chipchura, and Bonk next season? Maybe we can concentrate on acquring a top goal scorer and a top D.  Besides Brad Richards, I don't think an Arnott or a Lang would be a good solution...

The two most "talented" teams (Detroit & Ottawa) who finished first in their conferences, were eliminated early in the post season. The most balanced teams, with no "top 5" center, are the ones that will be playing in the semis...

With the addition of a sniper (or two) and a top D, those 4 centers can surely do the job right?

I have not actually seen Chipchura this year, but by all accounts he needs a year of seasoning because of his weak skating. Even if he were to make the team, it would probably be at the expense of Bonk (and Ribeiro, obviously...who I can't see fitting into this team's plans unless Pleks is traded). He would not be a top-3 centre.

The team probably needs a top-flight centre with size. Ideally it would be someone who can score goals, because Kovalev probably complements a net-crashing finisher more than he does a playmaker, given that he wants, needs, and gets the puck all the time, and does a lot of different things with it. Kovalev can score, but he's probably even better as a guy who draws defenders and lays it off to a finisher in the slot.

Plekanec and Koivu are not that guy. They are quite similar to each other (at least on the surface...it remains to be seen how much heart and toughness Plekanec shows in the long term) in that they are playmakers who can pass, skate, stickhandle, create space, be defensively responsible, etc...They aren't quite the ideal guy for Kovalev because they aren't great finishers or guys who are born to stand in front of the net and take punishment. I like Pleks AND Koivu, but I don't think they are ideal as a top 2 pairing.

Koivu at #2, Pleks and Bonk as #3 and #4. Plus a big guy to play with Kovy. That's actually a pretty good situation at centre. We are close.

All that said, I've seen teams with 3 finesse centres and one grinder do just fine (cf. Detroit). But I don't see Koivu and Pleks as exactly Fedorov and Yzerman. And Ribeiro and Bonk are no Larionov and Draper either.

not to bash Plecanek or anything, but the tournament right now is FAR from star studded, which is one of the main reasons Plekky is playing. No doubt he is good. But put him up against the real stars of the game, and you would see why he is how he is on montreal. Decent and consistantly a strong player at both ends. They guy will turn into a VERY good defensive center with offensive punch. But he wont be a super star. Hell be a draper at most.

I am with you Johab, a poor-man's Saku he will be. Probably a bit more offense than Draper, but otherwise similar.

Different player though, really (from Draper I mean - I agree with the poor man's Saku assessment). He's a better skater, passer, etc...but not as physical or just generally tough. Plus he hasn't proven he's consistent. But he looks pretty good so far. You can't knock his playoff performance, and that means something.
