There does not appear to be any quick fix to the Habs need of a quality centerman to compliment Koviu. The ufa's available are slim pickings: Savard, Arnott,Cullen,Peca, Weight, Allison, Cassels and Briere. Briere would appear to be the most attractive, but Buffalo will be well under the cap and probably will resign him. Arnott will be 31 and has not lived up to his potential. Along with Savard there will probably be teams that overpay for either Arnott and Savard. Both would be an upgrade over Riberio, but there is no guarantee Gainey can sign either of them.
A better strategy, perhaps, would be to go after a quality free agent defenceman as there is an abundance of them, relatively speaking, and concentrate on acquiring a winger with some scoring ability. In the end it will probably mean that somehow the Canadiens are going to have to try and coax a more productive season out of Riberio, unless Gainey can pull off a major trade to land another quality center.
Personally I think the Canadiens need a centre-man for Kovalev. a real one at that. But I'm with you, it's slim pickings right now. Would Jason Arnott want to come to a place where there, as GM gainey puts it "there's spice"?
Out of that list I would have to say that Peca is probably the grittiest player but he is more of a defensive type center. I was always impressed by his work ethic when he was with the Sabres and Islanders but I kind of lost track of him after he got traded. Weight hasn't done a whole heck of alot since he got traded to Carolina and the rest I haven't kept tabs on. I guess we will see at the end of the summer or maybe a bit sooner.
if we cannot land another (big)center we cant bring ribs back , if we have to go into the season with 2 small centers id rather give the job to plecs and use the money elsewhere , maybe if our centers are small we can get some big wingers .

Not to be obtuse, but what does that mean? Pressure to perform?

Oh, when Gainey had his post mortem press conference, he made reference to there being "spice" playing for Montreal. Yes pressure to perform. Yes, to media scrutiny. Yes to high fan expectations.
