Portuguese Pride!!

Man, i have been to so many message boards and noticed how much crap is written about my boy Ribeiro. Especially when the trading deadline came around. Maybe its because we come from the same heritage (Portugal) but i think Ribeiro is awesome.  The kid can straight up play. Maybe he didn't have the greatest year but come on cut em some slack. Why do we want to get rid of a young talented player? Because he doesn't always get his shirt dirty. Come on lets be serious. Thats not his style. He is a good stickhandler with good playmaking ability. Getting rid of Ribs would be a big mistake because he will be a great player. I would be so dissappointed in Gainey if he decides to get rid of Ribs. I'm still trying to get over Theodore and getting rid of Ribeiro will make so angry unless we get an unbelievable superstar but that obviously won't happen. So please stop talking trash about Ribeiro, the kid is nasty, and we will regret it if we do get rid of him trust me!!!

i disagree. Here is why.

Ribeiro is a slow skater, has a weak shot, cant hit, cant play defense, takes lazy penalties and most of the time is knocked of the puck toooo easily. Iam not saying the does not put effort like he did in the last 10 games or so, but i see where you are coming from (heritage and Portuguese pride) by wanting to keep him. Ribeiro just does not fit in the New NHL. Montreal's management was hoping Ribeiro would turn out Like a Spezza. He flunked miserably!

by the way.....is this mike ribeiro???

i totally agree with you that he doesnt have those qualities, but look at gretzky, was he the fastest? did he have the hardest shot? did he hit? or another example was lemieux when he came back a few years ago. he certainately wasnt the fastest or checked the most or had the hardest shot. it comes down to smart hockey. and Ribeiro is a smart hockey player. and being a smart player will get you more points than some one who can just shoot or just skate or just hit. he knows what to do with the puck, he has good hockey sense. he can distribute the puck as well as anybody in the nhl.

But Hockey has Evelutionized itself almost 100%. Back when Gretzky played, He was ten years ahead of all the players he played against and with. He wasnt the fastest but he was 3 or 4 passes ahead of every play. Same with Lemieux. I consider Lemiuex 10 x better than Gretzky in my opinion. He is a phenomenon that will never be another like him.

I agree that he has talent but he is NEVER going to become a "great" player. Ovechkin and Crosby are great...to convince us that Ribeiro will ever be in their league is not possible.

So let's give Ribeiro another chance....what is this, his tenth chance to prove himself. The Habs can not spend time with a 27 year old player , hoping that he will develop into a solid, consistent NHLer. If you care for the Habs' short term and long term success, don't have this wait and see attitude with Ribs....if the opportunity knocks to have Ribs included in a trade to better this team (who fights for 8th spot every year), so be it.

Again, I like Ribeiro but...that is just it, it always ends with a "but". We all want him to be that player you are hoping he will become. I just feel that this was the year that he should of became that player. He surely showed signs when he was paired with Kovy but...there's that "but" again.

Maybe it's because I just finished watching a Bio on Ken Dryden and that those great teams he was on but ask yourself what those players think of Ribs. It takes heart to be a solid NHLer, Ribs hasn't proven that has it game after game. Maybe we expect too much from him but that's too bad...look at how much crap Koivu, Kovalev, Souray, etc has gotten this year.

Lastly, Mike will play in this league for several more years (unlike his best buddy- Dags) but don't be angry if it's not with the Habs...especially if we improve team in the process

Wow! Impressive. You must not be Canadian. I can't think of too many Canadians who played for a team on the level of Leverkusen.

Of course I'm a soccer fan. Along side the Canadiens the only sports club I really care about is Manchester United. I have a team here in Norway too, of course, Fredrikstad, but they're way behind. In the upcoming world cup I'll be supporting England. In international sports I support Norway but since we usually don't qualify I have to find someone else. In soccer it's England, in hockey it's Canada and Finland.

In curling it's Norway all the way. We haven't been too good the last couple years, but we all know who won the gold in 2002?

Well, I disagree pretty much with evrrything you say about the guy,  He much too soft, needs to pump iron, put on some weight, get a harder shot and learn to skate.  He definitely has talent, but he'll never be able to use it as long as he's knocked off the puck by anyone who gives him any type of a love tap.  He's been on the team for about 5 years; how much time do we give him to develop?

Having said that, welcome to the Board, Newbie!  You are the fourth (at least) from your area.  Davidb and his son NorthwindsNS are from Falmouth, and Johnny USA is from Boston.

Well I wish Ribs would play with more Portuguese pride.  Barry said it...lazy.  Ribs needs to work hard every shift to be effective....his worth ethic has always come into question even in Junior.  I feel Ribs can be an effective player.... after all he led the team in points the last season prior to the rule changes.  If the likes of Bulis and Zednick don't come back then I don't see how we keep a guy like Ribs.  I certainly can't see him being our 2nd line centre next year.

Speaking of "Greek" pride, that was some Euro cup eh!  Sadly, my Greek team couldn't qualify for the world cup.  Still waiting for Canada to do something big in soccer.

Yes I follow football!
In my case, for the World Cup, it's anybody except England!(Petty perhaps- but I am Scottish!)
Scotland beat Bulgaria 5-1 yesterday- thus doubling our annual goal tally in one game!

Does anyone know where i can get this Therrien rant online?   One of my alltime classic.  I remember that day on Team990 when they must have played it over 20 times and i was laughing at work.

No offence portugal or brazil fans but we all know Italy will take the world cup.  We got luca toni, totti, zanetti, nesta, cannavaro, camoranesi.and we have the best goaltender in the world Gianluigi Buffon.  Brazil got Didas, but when its Juve vs. AC Milan, Buffon almost always comes out on top.

Cheers

Frank, I'm a hockey fanatic but nothing compared to football/soccer. Juventus has been my team since I was a kid. Eventhough, I was born in Italy, I really don't think Italy will make it. Like always, they'll do well but like in the last 20 years +, they'll fall short....but how about those Habs?

Please refrain from using the words Gretzky and Ribeiro in the same post.  Big difference is Gretz would instinctively know where the puck was going to be and that made up for his lack of speed.

I have to agree that Ribs has outlasted his welcome with this team. He has had ample time to show what he can do, and frankly it is not enough to warrant a spot on this team.  He's weak, slow, lazy, scared to shoot on goal, non-productive and all-around, just very unlikable as a player.  If we want this team to succeed, we have to trim the fat and dump guys like Ribs, Sundy and Bonk who give nothing back (although Bonk was contributing more than Ribs at the seasons end but that is not saying much).

I think it's Brazil's World Cup to lose .  I'll give you all my scouting report from my seat at their tournament opener in Berlin versus Croatia...

Oh please.

When was the last time Italy won anything remotely prestigious on the international level? They're bonafied chokers who play a style of futbol that is becoming old, fast. They are not in Brazil's league and even Portugal, who play the most beautiful style of futbol in Europe, would fair well against the Azzuri.

I think gretzky had a "FEW" more assist's and goal's than Riberio at that age ...didn't he?
