Guys...my goal is definately not to start an English/French debate or bash francophone BECAUSE MANY OF MY FRIENDS AND A FEW PEOPLE IN MY FAMILY ARE FRENCH AND I LOVE THEM DEARLY. I MYSELF CAN BE CONSIDERED PART FRANCOPHONE ALSO.
I moved here when I was 2 years old and have been a very proud Montrealer ever since. I've convinced myself that the discrimination in this city has decreased substantially. Yes, the French/English bulls***. Somehow signs of it always come back regularily. Now it's clearly directed towards a Habs player.
I'll explain in point form:
• Koivu is diagnosed with cancer and fights the desease to come back to a standing ovation by Montrealers.
• Not to long after, he gets in an small altercation with Ribs during practice. Ribs is a francophone BTW. After people saying what an inspiration Saks is, he gets BOOED the next game by the crowd....disgusting (Something I will never forget). Why did Saks get the raw deal...hmm let me think...oh ya, he wasn't born here.
• He signs a lucrative contract that many people believe to be a mistake...which is understandable but right away, journalists start saying that Begin or Bouillon deserve more...do you see my point yet? In addition, he asked for a no trade clause because he OBVIOUSLY LOVES THE ORGANIZATION AND THE CITY/FANS.
• A few weeks ago, he almost looses an eye and misses the rest of the playoffs. A dumbass reporter starts flashing pictures of Saks in the TV room which is harmful for his eye. No real apology was given to Saks.
• NOW IS THE CHERRY! IN THE NEWS THERE IS A CONTRAVERSY THAT SAKS NEVER LEARNED TO SPEAK FRENCH. WHY DOESN'T HE SAY AFEW WORDS IN FRENCH, THEY SAY NOT EVEN A "Salut, Bonjour, or Merci" is thrown their way....which is freakin bulls***, I've heard him say those words a few times.
Is it in his contract to be fluent in French? Do you know of one person who doesn't understand English in Montreal? Some don't speak it well but almost all understand it. THEY PUT THE TRANSLATION OR THEY TRANSLATE ON THE SPOT WHEN A PLAYER DOES AN INTERVIEW IN ENGLISH. What else is needed?
I speak fluent English, French, Italian, and Spanish not because I NEED to but because I want to. Sorry but if you don't at least understand English in year 2006, good luck!
This is really the last straw when it comes to the language bulls***! WHO CARES IF WE HAD TO COMMUNICATE IN SIGN LANGUAGE FOR THAT MATTER!
Getting back to the point, there are still some Canadian players who are reluctant to play in Montreal because of incidents like these ones. Are they true are they not, they ask themselves. They are true! What a disgusting way to treat the captain, a person who's always been grateful, respectful, and giving to the diverse culture in Montreal!
Simple answer (and no disrespect to any french posters here). french people like to bitch. They bitch about anything, at any job I've ever had, it is the french people who are never happy, who swear non-stop, who are aggressive, and so and so forth. Its the way they were raised.
Knowing the history, and knowing how the Francophone majority were treated until the 70's by the Anglophone minority that ran everything, I'm surprised there is such a good spirit in Montreal..
But one thing that irks me is the lack of English on emergency signs on the highway, even when that highway is bringing in Millions in dollars from visitors that are more interested in a good time than language-based oppression.
Pretty petty if you ask me, and endangering the lives of not only the Anglo drivers, but all the resulting accident victims as well
It's an unfortunate fact that without the tax support of anglophones accross the country, Quebec would go into an economic tailspin. But the autonomy afforded Quebec doesn't reflect that, it reflects an interest of the majority to accomodate a respected minority.
Maybe time for the language police in Quebec to do the same...
This post is about SOME of the damn reporters (montreal media) who have to make an issue that Saks hasn't learnt French...It just makes me numb! It's just ludicrous!

I wasn't raised that way.

I am sorry but i think this topic is unnecessary and will probably start an unnecessary argument. I myself was born here in Montreal and i have nothing against Immigrants or athelets that come to our beloved country! its kind of an honor! i believe that it is a MUST, if you move to a country where they speak...lets say.....Portuguese, you should try and learn the language to become fluent. i completely agree, that if you come to Montreal QC, you should try and learn french!
I'd like to know, What percentage of the NHL is fluent French? Dear God!!!! I think it should be a players choice what language they choose to use/speak. (I know it's not really the same thing... but) Do American teams have to speak Spanish? What about Ottawa? Do they have to speak French to get respect from their fans????
Some people need to get over themselves... they are not the center of the universe & players do not have to follow their demands because it's easiest on them. Montreal is the only team to broadcast in a different language in the entire NHL. If we want to hear "Pro Habs" announcing we must all learn French???
I'm sure more of the French speakers know more English than the English speakers know French.

I'm an Anglaphone and I was born in Montreal and spent the first 21 years of my life there. From my experience then as well as my experience now, working for a massive company headquartered in Montreal...I dissagree 100% with these comments. Generalizing like that is ALWAYS a bad thing, and just because you say "no disrespect " does not absolve you from being disrespectful Jay.
if you come to Montreal QC, you should try and learn french!
We live in a free country and the national languages are English and French. If you speak either you should be fine. Quebec is not a country and the reporters and anyone else who want to speak to an English speaking player should learn the language, not the other way around.
Here's a point I'd like to make. My family is mostly French (well there are French on my maternal side, Newfie on my paternal but I rarely see that side of the fam) Most of them live in Sturgeon Falls Ontario where French was (is) the main language (is = The street sign's say STOP / ARRET still & things like that) & like 60% of the city is kin to me. They originally came here from France many many years ago. My mother is fluent, as is everyone from her generation & older, but no one else in our family speaks a word a French... why?? because they live in Canada & English is what's spoken. They've chosen to learn the language of our country because there was too much confusion outside of Sturgeon Falls with language. (i.e.. North Bay)
If people choose to speak English instead of French, that should be their option. If French speaking people can't understand him but want too... they should be the ones to learn English, not make a controversy out of it. Seems a bit petty.
Guys/Gals, my post was to point out how injust the Montreal media has been to Koivu...and they had to end the season with the fact that he doesn't speak French. I didn't mean for this post to become a debate on French Vs. English. It's about some idiots in the media always come back with the language issue.
There are periods when I speak more French than English...That's my point - WHO CARES and why are they picking on Koivu for something so meaningless IMO.

I am simply responding to what you posted. If you didn't want comments on the issue, why post it at all?

lol wow! hold on a sec.....when I say "who care's", I'm saying that it shouldn't matter if Koivu answers the media in French or English. "Who Care's" that he answers in English because he obviously can't answer in French. Of course I care that they are busting his chops considering what he's gone through. That's what is frustrating.

That point is a good one, I'm sure all of the coaching & team meetings are in English, but it has been past practice for english speaking Habs captains to learn French if I remember correctly, no? Bu yes, with all that's been going on it is a petty ill timed dig by the media.

I would like to know who the reporter is that started this petty stuff on Koivu. He/she should be the one singled out or else it seems like we are saying all Montreal journalists are shallow...which is quite the opposite.
maybe we could stop this controversy by naming a mute as our next captain.......totally stupid post, but the whole issue is stupid in my view as well......

We speak mostly English in the COUNTRY saku plays in....Hello!
Further to that so this does not tailspin into unfortunate arguments...I mean no disrespect when I say the majority speak English as first language...It is just a fact...I re-read my post and thought it might sound like I was "flaming" our French speaking brotherin'...not the case.
I just mean if Saku11's argument is that you should learn the language of the country you play in...the Saku has done that...Quebec is not a country...it is a province...

I've worked with people from all over the world, and if there's one truth, everyone bitches about the same..
Well, maybe German tourists in Spain might have a slight edge, but they make up for it with all that fine hand-craftsmanship...
Somehow when I hear the words "Flaming" and "French" in the same sentence, my mind drifts to a happier time in my life... -- Edited by brooklynhabfan at 20:56, 2006-05-05
