Well, the season is over and the usual comments from players, who you would expect comments from, have arrived!!!
Zednik is not sure the Habs want him back. He says it's left to be seen to what point they would want to keep him. Quote "If they want me, I still have one more year on my contract, otherwise, maybe it's time for me to change decor". Wow!!! What a surprise, he is dying to come back, isn't he?What bugs me is that he put himself in this situation by his lower than average play this year and now he's playing the victim...Ya, the Habs are the bad guys here Zed!
Kovalev -is being another head case/sour puss. After Gainey saying that Kovy could of given more, he responds by saying that Gainey can say whatever he wants, he has a reputation for criticism anyway...Hello? Can't believe he said that....Anyway, he went on to say that the reporters should be speaking with Gainey about this and not him. Someone, please give him a pacifier!
Here's the beauty. He was also asked how he feels about Carbo being the head coach next season. He said that it was the duty of the coaches to make desicions and for him to stay quiet about them. Sarcastic players bug the heck out of me!
In any case, Gainey better know what he is in store for because one wrong desicion and he could ruin the chemistry this team. Obviously, the team can't have players criticising the coach or the organization...I guess it's another obstacle for management

Why would Zednik change his wallpaper just because the Habs don't want him back?
But seriously, after the year he's had, why should he expect the team to be happy with him - or any other team to want him, for that matter? He's in no position to be critical of others. He needs to navel gaze, work like hell in the off-season, and prove to the team - and to the NHL - that he can become a top-flight player again. To me, he was one of the biggest disappointments on the Habs this year; a huge underachiever.
As for Kovalev, I think he is what he is - a supremely talented player who could put out greater results if he tried 100% every night. I don't think we'll ever change that, and we should accept him the way he is or get rid of him. For me. I'd prefer to accept him the way he is. He's a great arrow to have in our quiver, even if he misfires occasionally.

Ever think maybe Kovy doesn't understand why Gainey feels this way? & that's why he instructed them to seek out Gainey for the answer? People with two differing opinions don't always end up understanding each other & seeing eye to eye. Besides, it's true... Gainey does criticize. He also doesn't yell, doesn't show emotion, he doesn't "fight" bad calls etc... that's what a coach is supposed to do right? Maybe Kovy disagrees with his method, who knows for sure.
As for the Carbo comment, the answer doesn't even fit the question.... again I think it's lack of conversation skills in English that is the issue. Is it possible for a player who speaks another language (who has a fair grasp of English but not always) to be mis-quoted or mis-interpreted?
& Sarcastic posters bug the heck out of me.... LOL Just Kiddin' Key
One thing is for sure, give kovalev Steve Begin's work ethic, and Kovy would be an unstoppable machine in the NHL. PLayer who are born with talent such as kovalev's are dangerous to themselves if they don't want to better themselves. And are dangerous to other if they seek to become better than the last game they played, every game.
MC, I know you and hubby are big Kovy fans, and I love the guy when he plays. I've always accepted that he's a player that turns it on and off in the regular season at will, and if they make the playoff that's ok with me. But, for two playoffs in a row he sure looks like he's only played in games he wants to play in. He was definately a non factor in a couple of games in this years playoffs IMHO, and I'll never forget the previous playoffs where he took the minor slash and played it up instead of getting back in the play...remember? That cost us a critical goal.
Sorry, like I said, I love the guy when he plays great when he feels like it. But no player is bigger than the team, especially the Habs, and I really think Kovy thinks he is. He's definately a player I'd trade if we could get fair value for him.

YES! If he had a good work ethic, he could be one of the all time best! It's so frustrating to see that kind of tallent squandered by dissinterest and attitude
Again.... I think if we wait for the full season of "the real" Kovalev to shine next year, we'll sail through the season on his coat tails. With Carbo in, who knows what'll happen.... linemates may change (hopefully) hostility may disappear altogether, who knows.... providing his health stays up.... there'll be no stopping him/them. Tag Huet on that equation..... & holy moly!!! Imagine if we had a whole year of both of them in top form......
We'll see, most people don't get over a bad work ethic, I hope Kovy does, because I really like his upside and hope we see his full potential.
As for Huet, yes I want him back, but I hope they don't overspend on him as he's still unproven. I did see a lot about him that worries me. He goes down on almost every shot, if him and the coaches don't correct that, he's going to start getting beat up high a lot more often. Don't get me wrong, I really like Huet and he did a truly amazing job for us down the stretch, I just want to see him for a full season before I go too overboard on him
The only time we will see the "real" Kovalev or in other words a dominant Kovalev is when his contract is about to expire. he has all the tools, he's won one cup he doesn't care about another. He cares about MONEY, right now he's got that locked up but wait until its the last year of his contract and he plays HUGE for more money. A guy like him should only ever be signed to one year deals.

Wow... must be great knowing what is in the head of every player. How do you know what he does/doesn't care about? Are you close to him? Does he confide in you? If not.... You are only voicing your opinion, not stating fact. Do you know every detail inside the locker room? What the coach says/does? Do you know the whole story? Do you know any of the story?
Read GirlsGoneHabs thread from today.... even Gainey said he was impressed by Kovy this season.
He was the #1 guy on our team this year. Every point you've made should be directed towards majority of our team this year. And as for the cup comment.... when he holds the cup over his head (& he will again) I won't say I told you so... I'll just say....

If he does i will be smiling as well but it won't happen for him as a hab unless there are some drastic changes. And your right most of my comments on Kovalev can be applied to many but others already knock players and i prefer not to add a coment about players. And no im not in the dressing room but if your going to tell me that Kovy gives a flying F*** about the Habs than ill just half to

You do that then.... He's one of the only ones that ... how'd you put it... gave a flying F*** this year. Who's the one who turned up the heat against Toronto when no one else would????
From reading that, and watching his play this year, I wonder if Zednik really has the love for the game and loyalty to his team that would justify keeping him.
As for Kovalev, you take the good with the bad. His quotes are always pretty funny, and sometimes I think he just likes to play mind games with the media. I'd rather hear Kovy's snide (or just mystifying) remarks than the pablum most players spout off. I wouldn't place too much weight on media statements anyway. What goes on behind the scenes is what matters, and we all have to admit we don't know a whole lot about that (although maybe barry's got some inside info).
Hey, the guy's a primadonna. So are most of the good players, even the ones who pretend they aren't. Even Messier could be a primadonna. As we've seen, even Gainey can be a primadonna in his own way, and he was one of the ultimate team guys. At least Kovalev is obvious about it.
What I DO want to see is more consistent effort next year. I know I probably won't get it, but we need Kovalev nonetheless at this point.

Good post Plouf. I had a few chuckles all the way through it. Sometimes we forget that professional athletes are just like any other person, they have opinions and can be sensitive to anything

He wasn't the only one to turn up the heat that game. Dandy fought. Zednik fought off two guys (cause tucker went after Ribs) But unlike Zednik, Kovy fought only for himself not for the team. Don't get me wrong cause i loved that hit, but to say that his hit is proof that he is a team player? I think it actually proves my point, Kovy can hit but he only will when he gets hit or when he gets angry never to stick up for a teammate, like a real team player.

How many times did he stick up for Huet when he got rushed?????? Yeah he's only there for himself..... uuuhuh! & don't compare Kovy to Zed.... ppuuullleeaasseee.
& Did I say it was proof that he was a team player???? ummm NO! I said he's the one who turned up the heat & got the team going & I used Toronto as an example....& it's not the only instance.... there were many.
Care to put anymore words in my mouth? If that's your interpretation of what I said... then I'm better off ignoring your replies, cause your post are based on your false interpretations and made up stuff.

Actually i would like to know the answer to this question as i don't recall him doing it many times. Maybe once or twice. And as for putting the words in your mouth i apoligize and i didn't read your post properly and i missundertood.

Well I have most of this season's games on DVD..... would you like me to count myself or send you a copy with Kovy's abilities/ actions.... 'cause I can also make a video montage of other players short comings this season along with it....

That would be great if you could somehow post them or make a montage not of his scoring but offensive prowess. If its not too much trouble

Yes it is too much trouble.... I'm not gonna learn how to do all that computer crap just for you. Please. I said I'd make a copy of the DVD's, not learn about how to post them on the computer & waste my time to prove the ignorance of posters.

Calm down, i thought you already knew how. Or maybe you looked through those tapes and relized you couldn't find a real play to back up your argument or disprove mine.

I can make copies of the games (or portions of it) off my DVD recorders hard drive & not on the computer. I'd have to send the DVD (s) to you directly....or a P.O.BOX if you don't want me to have your address. Not sure how to do the portions yet though... the manual for the recorder isn't that huge... I'm sure it's not that hard, other words, you'll have to go through each DVD individually.

I agree that Kovy when he is on his game is awesome.....and there is no denying his talent or doubt that he is a great contributor to our team. But I am not convinced that he has the attitude, "team over self". Sometimes I think that he is his own biggest fan...on the other hand, I sure would not like to see him go elsewhere. When he's hot, he's hot and I would rather he be hot with our team than anywhere else.
Hey Di and all, much agreed. I love Kovalev. When he's in the game, there are not many in the NHL that can catch him, let alone take the puck away from him (we saw many, many highlights this season of him making it look soooo easy to undress d-men while making himself look like he was gliding along at a figure skating practice). I'll never forget that hit on Tucker - it was obvious after the fact that Kovy knew exactly what he was doing. He sent the message in that game allright.
However, our fans are not the first team's fans to get upset with him for seeming disinterested, floating and putting himself over the team. I would hate to see him go, but at times he is SO DAMNED FRUSTRATING!
Every time I am about to give up on him, he does something to rope me back in. I am no great fan of his, but he can dominate games. I would say keep him unless we get a really strong offer from someone. I would not be surprised to see him traded though after reading the season ending comments between him and Gainey.

Actually Ribs has done that to me a couple of times but when you realize that there is a pattern, you refuse to be fooled again. Concerning Kovy's attitude, I don't think he's that bad, to the point where it's affecting other players in the room. The problem is this animosity is towards the GM...touchy.
