It's simple - the sweater and team are bigger than any individual player. I grew up when the greatest players in the game (way too long a list of great players to name here) put themselves 2nd to the team.
When Dryden left over money for a year and articled in Toronto - screw him I thought
When LeClair found it too hard to play here - ditto
When Roy disrespected the sweater and teammates on National TV - ditto again
When Kovalev quit - same
Too many greats went through bad times, bad coaches and booing fans - never once losing their class, quitting or wanting out.
If we keep talented players who quit in play-off games, or repeatedly swan dive, or provoke fights then turtle or blame refs - then the Habs are just another team.
I'm sorry I can't look at any player in a "CH" and just see points, GAA or skill set - if I don't see class the rest is moot.
That's why I'm thankful we have Koivu, Leafs have Sundin - if you don't see the difference I can't explain it - you won't see it on the stats page.
I would bet on it that Kovalev is traded on the "Theo plan" and on the stats sheet it will appear we got soaked in the trade - don't bet on THAT.
Final thought - in the 70s teams were brutalized by Shero and his Flyers - the Leafs' solution? Cry to the League, cry to the papers, try and bring in a couple of brutes - when that all failed get the Attorney General to start making arrests!
The Hab plan - quiet stoicism followed by a group of hockey greats and regular guys all wearing a fabled Jersey banning together one night in Philly to administer a collective ass-kicking and hockey lesson to a bunch of minor league thugs in orange and black.

I agree with a lot of that Cleg, especially the Dryden bit. He was my hero growing up, when he quit I said screw you...when he joined Leaf management, he was dead to me. After that, his early great play is completely meanenless to me.

Charlie Hustle. I get it. (But I wouldn't want him on my team.)

No Plouf, that' an ENGLAND player as my off-season avatar. It's not his fault he has to slum it during the league season....
Besides, Henry plays for some other horrid country

Cleggy, I agree. The one concern is, this is a different era and many players on each roster are in it for the loot. If we wait to build a team of "100% bleed Habs blood type player"...we may win a Cup in 50 years from now. The reality of the sport is, it's a bussiness for both sides...players and owners! Many great players will only come here if the money is here. How many Begin's are there in this league??

(can you tell it's World Cup time?)
I can't help but note that Mr.Cole has been removed.
Begin, Koivu, Bouillion,Rivet, Souray,Murray....these are all guys that just shut up and play depsite the crazy world in Montreal around them....bleed the red/white/blue.
Higgins and Komi seem poised to have similair character.

Good list. I like the look of Plekanec and Huet too.
Bravo, Cleggy. There aren't many teams in any sport nowadays that have character, much less integrity. I'd rather lose with a bunch of class players than win with a bunch of bums. There's a reason a guy like Jean Beliveau is still active with this team. Class breeds class -- and sometimes, Stanley Cups.
i heard the NHL is thinking about removing names from the jersey again in hopes that what cleg has mentioned comes back again. I wouldnt mind....but i dont think it would solve the problem...
