Penalty Killing

Why do players who don't have a stick when killing a penalty (ie. Bonk after he gave his to Souray) not just skate straight to the bench and grab a new one.  I realize that they would be facing a 5 on 3 for a few seconds, but almost all players are useless without a stick.

I'm not blaming Bonk or Gainey or anyone (except I would blame Larue), but it just seems like it would be more beneficial if all of the players on the PK knew that if a forward breaks his stick or gives it to a d-man, the player is going to rush to the bench and get a new one and get back into the play.  Playing short-handed and having a guy without a stick is pretty much the same as being down 2 men, as it was last night, so why not skate to the bench and grab a new one and get back into the play?

P.S.  I can't wait to see Kovalev put the team on his back in the next game!

Remember that in the first OT period the teams are going the same way they go in the 2nd period.

The bench is twice as far away.

I guess they hope they can block shots without the stick, kinda like begin did the game before he got hurt in jersey.

Another thing on the power play - why aren't they playing a high pressure penalty kill to force the puck. If they are such a fast team, why aren't they forcing the puck and the d-men?  Montreal seems to give the point men all the time in the world to set up.  The Sabres are phenomenal at forcing the puck on the power play and consequently have one of the best penalty kills in the business.  Our worst penalty kill % in the playoffs is a testament that more needs to be done.

I've been contemplating the very same thing.  In the five seconds it would take to either (a) get a stick handed to you or (b) get on the bench and have another player get on the ice , the benefits would be tremendous.  It seems a small price to pay for a minute of 5-on-3 saved (which did them in last night).

Good post, newbie.
