I am hoping Johnny that it is one of those injuries that "looks worse than it is" but that may be wishful thinking. The little smurf (and I say that respectfully) is a tough piece of meat and you do not see him go down and get off the ice in a hurry like that. I pray he is ok.

Ugh, it looks pretty bad. Out for game and off to the hospital. The slow mo shot pretty much confirmed to me it's his eye, and not just around his eye. Fingers & toes crossed for Saks!!!

Looks like he's done for the series and beyond boys and girls.

And-o and AB, you've got your wish.

Johnny USA states:

"Like the guys on CJAD said, that is not good news.  He may be done for the rest of the year, however long it lasts."

Easily the most tasteless post ever!!!

Kudos JohnM for setting a new all-time low!  Jerk!!!

And-o has already said his bed-time prayers for a man's eye...maybe I'll add another for the lost soul of an idiot poster here.

Sick JohnM...SICK!

This reminds me so much of the Pierre Mondou injury. I hope I am wrong. No matter what anyone thinks of any one player, its times like these that we all come together and say a prayer for the little guy. That bastard Stillman should be fined by the league. I hope Gainey has his say in the matter. Damn it

My 11 year-old son lost 80% of the vision in his left eye after getting nailed by a street hockey stick on 9/11/2004. Permanent damage to the choroid. I can only pray that Koivu comes out of this better than that. It's ironic that he's one of the guys who wears a shield. To know that Williams got away with it makes it even worse -- if it could be worse.

Two nights from now, I expect that Williams is going to get quite a reception at the Bell Centre, both from fans and especially from Saku's Canadiens teammates.

The Hurricanes will pay.

You know what And-o. I agree that was tasteless but tell me the truth....Is there even 1% of you that thought you might get a similar remark like that tonight? I'm sure you were dreading an outcome like this.

Sometimes, when you persist, you put yourself in a situation like this one. Humans are revengeful Ando. I'm sorry that you and AB were disrespected.

I was hoping that the topic of conversation would of been the refs and not another embarrassing arguement related to Koivu's injury. This really sucks. I'm not sure if being on this board during the playoffs is a positive or a negative. So far it's been a neg.

Don't be too quick to jump on Stillman, it sure looked accidental to me. In fact, I'll gaurantee you that NO player in the league would take out a guys eye on purpose, EVER. Now the entire officiating should be suspended, or fired!

Just heard on TSN that Gainey said at the press conference that the injury is on the eye, not around the eye.

Yes...I am sure we all will. This board is great...disagreements in all. We are all hab fans and hab or no hab...who wants to see a potential injury like that?

Man Koivu has been through a lot.

Nice job David, I'm not a religious man, but Saku will be in my prayers.

It's already been noted but its the fact Saks is a tough guy and the way he raced off of the ice that leaves me concerned that it is very serious.

Bad reffing is almost a given against the Habs this series and no one should blame Williams it was a 100% accident.

The Habs will rebound from this and I don't know what inspiration the Canes can take away from a game that even with stellar goaltending they would not have won if the Habs hadn't had to finish the 3rd and start the OT short-handed and without their captain.

Habs take the game Friday and finish up these guys on Sunday... and the refs can continue to be the Canes 7th man - won't matter.

Cleggs I like your inspiration. Its is just what we needed to read. I too believe the Habs will come out Fri with a sense of purpose. Thanks

I agree that Williams should not be vilified.  He was trying to lift the stick and missed.  That happens all the time.  It was an accident.  I hold nothing against the guy.

My question to you, Cleg, is why should bad reffing against the Habs be "a given"?  I know most non-Hab fans hate them, but shouldn't the refs be above all that?  I don't get it.

Unfortunately I did not see any of the game.  I think all of us at one time or another have posted about the terrible officiating against the Habs and it continues.  Are most of these refs. from Hog Town?  In any event, whether the high stick was accidental or otherwise it should still be a penalty and in this case 4 mins.  Did the refs. not see the incident?  An injury involving the eye is serious and it doesn't matter who was involved.  Lets hope and pray that Koivu is back soon.

I don't agree with that Nil. We see a lot of poorly reffed games against the Habs because most of us watch Habs only game or mostly Habs games. Dan Marouelli is from Edmonton and I've always thought of him as an anti Hab ref and basically just a lousy ref for all teams. Dennis LaRue was born in Savannah, Georgia and I have no opinion on him either way. We're going to draw the odd crappy ref, it's just odds. Let's leave the "blaming our woes on the refs" game to the Loaf fans

Except for this game though Kahuna.

I don't usually complain about refs either, maybe a couple times a year. But this was too much. Way too much.

I agree that it was too much Plouf, but it's going to happen. I'll turn the other cheek for this game...but if it happens again next game, I'm going to get in the jeep and go zebra hunting

EXCUSE ME PEOPLE......... can somebody tell me how that was an ACCIDENT????? ya, i DO blame that f***ing piece of excrament..... why did his stick fly straight upwards for no reason??  to try and lift koivu's stick?  and he missed, and his stick just flew right up into koivu's face??  even so........ thats total carelessness.  and who knows..... a move like that could COST SOMEONE AN EYE!!!!!!!!!      intentional or not, that should be a suspension.  maybe we should take out brind'amour's eye and even out the score.  we all know how the expression goes.

Mulsey good post.- as much as I disagree and dislike the method of which ANd-O and Ab Habman express their thoughts about Saks, I truly would NEVER believe that they would wish Koivu to be hurt, especially like this. I have been one calling for # 11 to step it up too, but Ilove this guy and all he has done. I have met him. I have had my share of health issues. No one has any idea how this guy and Mario Lemieux inspired me.  Yes we have our disagreements. Hell And-O was calling CJ an idiot at one time. But we are all fans and it is our passion that unites us. Let's all use that passion to pray for our Captain.

You and AB have been posting all year how Sak will get injured... Bad vibes lead to bad things IMO.

I don't know the reason Nil but I'll tell you this if you've ever watched Marouelli ref a Leafs game you'd swear he's on a teacher's pension!

I think some refs like to shove it in the face of fans at the Bell... I think the Habs get screwed the most at home.

And Nil don't ever underestimate the anti-French crap that is still part of hockey - how many players over the years have made bs comments on French-Canadien hockey players? Refs aren't allowed to speak to the press but if they were some of them would slip up too.

For my part I think some refs are trying to stick it to the fans - to me this is further supported by the absolute pomposity (you know - the BIG production about it - watch Marouelli call the OT penalty, then watch him signal the OT goal - he looks like he's conducting the Raleigh Philharmonic Orchestra) with which some of these jerks call penalties against the Habs (usually within 3 minutes of the crowd roasting them for missing one against the Habs)

Let me conclude with the fact that the Habs and their coaches are the classiest in the League when a penalty is called against them) but one day Gainey WILL complain to the League and they'd better listen because he's not a Quinn or a Hitchcock.

Saku Koivu
Canadian Press

MONTREAL (CP) -  The Montreal Canadiens had a major concern Wednesday night far greater than their 2-1 overtime loss to Carolina, as captain Saku Koivu was taken to hospital to see a specialist after he was accidentally struck near the left eye by the stick of Hurricanes forward Justin Williams.

Canadiens head coach Bob Gainey said Koivu took a few stitches near the eye and was to meet with Habs ophthalmologist Dr. John Little on Wednesday night.

Gainey couldn't say whether Koivu, who wears a visor, suffered any damage to the eye itself, but he described the hospital visit as precautionary.

"Whenever it's around the eye, I think it prudent and wise that all cautions should be taken," Gainey said.

Koivu was breaking to the Carolina net early in the second period when rookie Chris Higgins fed him with a centring pass. Just as the puck was arriving, Williams appeared to try and lift Koivu's stick but instead hit him in the face.

Koivu was bleeding from the left eye area as he made his way gingerly to the bench and directly to the Canadiens locker room.

There was no penalty called on the play, though referee Dennis La Rue was nearby and immediately blew the play dead at 4:52 of the second when he saw Koivu on the ice despite the fact Carolina had the puck and was breaking up ice.

The Canadiens said more details will be made available on Thursday.

Many in the Montreal dressing room afterwards had trouble understanding how LaRue missed the call, especially after Canadiens defenceman Mike Komisarek got nailed with a four-minute high-sticking call for an infraction on Cory Stillman with only 4:34 left to play in regulation.

"I didn't see a cut, it's not like (Stillman) needed stitches," said Canadiens centre Mike Ribeiro. "I think he bit his tongue. But they missed the one on Saku, and that one was more obvious than Stillman. If you give it with four minutes left, give the other one, too. But four minutes for biting the tongue? I don't get it."

The Canadiens killed off the four-minute power play with only one shot allowed to force overtime, but then Eric Staal scored the game-winner while Tomas Plekanec served a holding minor to cut Montreal's lead in the series to 2-1.

"I'm the guy that was in the penalty box, and that's all I can say," a disconsolate Plekanec said. "Maybe I held him, maybe he fell over the net, whatever it is they scored the OT winner and they got the game."

Game 4 of the series is in Montreal on Friday night.

JOHNM, COME ON ....REALLY, HOW OLD ARE YOU! nobody here wished bad upon anybody!!! That was a tragic injury that could lead to Koivus loss of sight! Do you understand that???? Just because someone doesnt like the way he has been playing does not mean they want him to get hurt! You really need some soul searching Bud and tonite when you put your little knees together to say a prayer, make sure YOU ask for forgiveness! Those comments you made make me sick!
