Some people will say that Washington's win against Atlanta put the Habs in the playoffs - through the back door.
I heartily disagree.
Yes, the Capitals' win was the clinching event, but what did the Habs do to get to that point in the first place? They had one of the best records in the NHL since the Olympic break. They got hot exactly when they needed to. They rode a hot goalie who stood on his head after his predecessor had fallen on his face. Their captain went hot when they needed him to, and contributed to a great stretch by his linemates. Their defense tightened up and hit high gear on offense, which had not been the case before the break.
Their best players were their best players.
The Habs went head-to head with Tampa and Atlanta in the last two weeks. In the past ten games, Tampa went 5-4-1; Atlanta went 6-3-1. Montreal went 7-3-0.
And given that Atlanta lost yesterday, the Habs actually clinched in Game 80.
Back door? Je ne croix pas!

a win tonight will be the end of the back-door theory, front door with a doorman.

You are absolutely right Nil. It may have come down to the final few games but it took a team effort to get them here. Their record to this point since the Olympics speaks for itself. While I have high hopes for the playoffs, where they go from here is "gravy" considering we were not even in contention at one point.
Go Habs....the real season now begins...it's a new ball...oops...hockey game
