Many people like to play coach… I like to play GM. I have been thinking a lot about our team and the summer free agent frenzy, as well as rookies coming up and this is where I think our current players stand on our team.
Now, the play-offs may alter this list a bit, but I think this is approximately where these players stand. I don’t think there is any doubt that with all the extra cash we have that Gainey won’t go after one of the top D and Centers available. We also have a few rookies who are going to push hard to get on this team. The present looks really good, but the future looks grrrrrreat! :)
I put Perez on the bubble because I could see him possibly packaged for an elite player, but I think he will stay. I hear conflicitng reports about Kovalev's effect on the team so I put him in purgatory because I don't know what to think. Dandenault might be bumped for a free-agent and I would keep him as the 7th, but I don't know if he would accept that role. Aebischer is a good goalie, but if Danis is ready...

People sound certain that Bulis and Zednik are gone. Are we sure? Could Gainey not be focused mostly on motivating them right now? You're probably right, but I wonder if there's more evidence other than the benchings.
I hear lots of who's gone and who's being traded. Remember guys, this is Gainey and he is not assertive with trades. He had three years to trade Zed, Ribs and Sunny for example and has resigned all three in that time instead.
He may do nothing at all.
Remember how badly we needed a trade leading up to CJ being scapgoat? Gainey didn't do squat but brought in Downey of which no team wanted.
When has Gainey ever did what was expected?
I think his 6 year plan might just be to not resign guys like Bulis and bring in farm guys like Kostityn when they are ready. Absolutely no gamble but the patient way.
Bulis gone, one fluke season is not going to cut it for me. Zednik stays, I beleive he scored 30 his last two seasons. He has not played his best this year but he will come around. Watch for him in the playoffs.
I really can't see Kovy on the bubble. He has 61 points this year playing with Ribs at center, and no left winger. 61 points with 3 guys on you is pretty good in my book.
I guess Ovechkin's 49 goals and 100 points with 5 guys on him every shift is f*cking unbelievable then. I'm sick of that excuse "guys are all over him". How the hell do you think Jagr feels every game? Crosby? They somehow manage to produce.

Nice one, Brook! Kovalev can dangle with the best of them, but when he isn't dangling, what is he doing? What else does he bring to the team? I am not saying these are the players I want to go. I am trying to look at it from a management viewpoint and say, "Where do players seem to stand in the organization come this summer?". If Gainey is building a championship team and he has a number of youngsters knocking on the door and a few free agents making him drool - where does he need to improve and which players have to be moved to do so?

Who said Kovalev is as explosive as Ovechkin? And Crosby? Did you look at the Pens early season line up? I know I sure did, I think Bonkers could score points playing with Palffy and Recchi. The plain and simple of it is my friend, that Kovalev is leading our team in scoring. Right now he is playing with a washed up, Jose Theodore tag along, and Yan "Please god put him back in the pressbox" Bulis. Ovechkin is unbelievable. Possibly the best player in the world right now, but how can you say he is by himself? Zubrus is a very skilled passer, and does have a touch around the net. And the Rangers are a stacked team, their 2nd line would be our 1st line in a heart beat.
So why use the "guys are all over him" excuse? Any decent player in the league can use that?Ovechkin is surrounded by no name guys with sticks. I saw Zubrus play, as did you. There was a reason we let him go. Other teams just key on Ovechkin and he still finds a way.
The thing is that Kovalev receives sooooo much praise on here, and I don't get it? If he is so amazing why does he not produce more? He did a nice job of barfing the puck up last night and was basically a sidenote. It's not that I don't like the guy, I just think the constant praise and folks saying he is one of the best players in the league (I've seen it on here MANY times), is so unwarranted. He is underproducing. Pure and simple. Until he scores 35 and nets 80 points for the Habs, then I'll believe the hype.

When was the last time a hab scored 80 points? I think we have to stop looking at these magic numbers like 50 goals, 100 points. We are not a great offensive team. What percentage of goals should he be in on? 20%? 30% ??????
