Okay, Canadiens, two hoursr later winning against Ottawa for the second time in less than a week, and now the media is going crazy as to who is the no. 1 goalie. Cristobal Huet? David Aebischer?
Apparently Gainey let it be known that the team does not have a no. 1 goalie.
If Montreal faces Ottawa in the 1st round, do they go with Huet who got them this far, or Aebischer, who has played extremely well against Ottawa?
Huet is number one, no possible controversy. Anything Gainey is saying in the media is to push Huet to stay number one. Aebischer has had 2 horrible games, 1 borderline game & two pretty good games. Seriously, Huet has stood on his head for several weeks, I refuse to beleive that Gainey seriously considers Aebischer number one.

You also have to take into consideration that it was Aebs first few games in a new environment. Those bad games were just that, bad games, not a reflection at all of Aebischer's game. I doubt we'll see that bad a side of Aeb again, he just looked out of place. Right now he's playing more like he normally does which is a great thing for the Habs.
Looks like Gainey is putting some confusion into his opponents, as well as starting contract negotiations a little early... Habtastic
I think you nailed it on that one , habtastic! How Gainey or anyone else would not choose Huet as his #1 today - when he's close to league-leading in all goaltending categories and being bandied about as a candidate for the Vezina and Hart Trophies - is beyond belief.
The media must be nuts. And Gainey's playing psychological games.

Gainey...you, your good you! (à la De Niro). Guys, he's just playing mingames. The truth is Abby still looks slow to get in postition. He's still giving awkward rebounds. There's no comparism right now. Huet got us into the playoffs. The other players picked up on his superb play and all lifted their game.

That might make for good TV, but rebounds are best left in basketball, not in front of the net... ... On the other hand, he has playoff experience...
On the other other hand, if it wasn't for Huet, we wouldn't be in the playoffs. Unless he gets hits by a bus or allows seven goals per game in his last four, he should start the playoffs.

I think it's a given that Huet will start. Look at it this way: the really important game recently was the New Jersey game, correct? And who was in the net? Exactly. Huet. Gainey knows what he's doing. He just likes to keep quiet about these things.
Anyone who's been watching the Habs play over the last two months has got to know that Huet is No. 1. He's earned it by his play, and Abby has done nothing to show tha the's ready to take it away from him. A couple decent games against a depleted Sens team doesn;t change the fact that he's not anywhere near as stable on his feet or as good at maintaining his angles as Huet. And yes, he's a rebound machine. It's fine for BG to publicly pretend that we have two No. 1 goalers, but anyone with a pair of eyes knows the truth.
I think it is clear that Huet is the man going into the playoffs. The genius of Gainey is in giving Aebischer some confidence prior to the playoffs and now he's got 2 goalies who can win for him on any given night. It's a 1-2 punch. Also, he's got the team believing in Aebischer. If anything happened to Huet, Abby would be in game ready shape to hop between the pipes and his mates would know he can handle the load.
