http://www.break.com/index/justonepunch.html I'm sure some of you would have seen this clip but if you watch it you'll notice Downey has the same stance he did last night and he waits for the other player to throw the first punch. He's a real fighter not a grapler like most fighter these days are.
I was wondering about that, because it was the other guy who challenged and Downey agreed, but when he dropped the gloves and waited, the othe guy didn't move in. Downey was ready and willing, but his opponent chickened out.
I'm telling ya Downey has no fear and can fight I watched him for a few years when he played for the Providence Bruins. The guy was loved by the fans because he fought he hit and every once in awhile he scored. As far as why he's not dropping the gloves every game now I bet Gainey knows why and to him thats all that matters.
I have this bad habit of comparing all Hab enforcers with Chris Nilan. I admit it's a mistake...Concerning Downey, he's doing his job well. There's no need for him to fight every game and there's no need to play him every game...
I saw a segment on Downey on TV a while back - he spends a lot of time working out in a boxing gym, I think. There was also a clip of him making the rounds where he knocked out Boulerice with one punch - a straight right to the chin. I'm quite sure he knows what he's doing.

There is a link to that clip on the original post if you missed it.
The thing is, Downey has had one fight of which he got beat up while trying to skate backwards.
Neil alo wanted him in the first and Downey turtled away. He had his chance to police the game early. Neil grew a foot and went to our net without fear all night after that.
The reason he kept away from Norton is because Norton would of creamed him.
Where is Ivanans when we need a fighter??
I still think that was a very silly signing by Gainey when he already signed two players that actually fight in the off season.

Boy AB, you'd think Downey and Koivu were related or something. Don't you think it's a little early to form such a strong opinion about the guy that you're making a couple posts a day about it? Let's cut the guy some slack here. Remember, Bonk was utter crap when he first arrived. Sometimes it takes a guy a little while to settle in. Bonk took TOO long, but Downey's been doing better lately, seems to me.

A little frustrating when guys are riding the pine for this guy. I wouldn't go as far as comparing Saks with Downey. Downey may be faster in a straight line but Saks has better overall talent.
Downey missed an opportunity last night. He was on the ice when Ken Klee slashed Begin..once again from Mr Downey..Notta..nuttin...zero...does this guy get a goal and all of a sudden believe he is a sniper? I really do not care if we got a 2 man advantage (which was pathetic), Downey should have been all over Klee.

Agreed... I am not a big proponent of fighting, but I felt that near the end of the 2nd or beginning of the 3rd that Downey should have started with someone to give the team some jump. At the very least he should have taken on Klee.

Begin wasn't slashed. The penalty was called on a play just off the side of the Begin fall. When I saw the replay, it was just there in the bottom right. I think it was Brodeur who pushed Begin or he kinda got tangled between 2 Devils. There was no reason to start a fight on that play BUT the slash could have. It was probably Downey who was slashed but he was more concerned with making sure his linemate could get up and off the ice safely than blindly getting into fisticuffs. Not every hit or slash need turn into a fight.
he should have gone after Klee? GET REAL! Even if there was a reason for him to get violent (which is completely inconclusive) there is a little thing called the INSTIGATOR RULE... What good would Downey be to a team... or any player for that matter... if they blew their top every time a teammate is touched on the ice. You pick a fight in retaliation and you watch the rest of the game from the dressing room...
I think the only way to prove to AB that Downey is tough is if he himself drops the gloves with him... But I am sure that his hands are pretty cramped from all the typing he doing about Downey so maybe we can schedule it for the summer time. And I still don't understand how Ivanans is such a fighter to you... What did he show you in his one 15 second NHL fight that blew you away so much? He is huge no question about that, but have you seen him fight in the AHL? Tell me if you have... and if so how is his record?

Actually if you see the replay, Begin was slashed across the face by Klee and Downey was near the post and seen it. It was the slash that made his legs buckle of which he fell awkward.
Downey waited too long to answer the bell and the refs already stepped in, so all Downey could do was chat it up as per usual.
Also, as Habtastic mentioned, he had all game to make a point and chose not to.
Sometimes a so called fighter has to motivate his team by antaganizing a fight rather than waiting in the wings to answer the bell of which he has only anwered once all season. That one fight also made him look silly when he skated backwards and got beat up after the player had to chase him.
After the Ivanans hype this season, AB was hoping to see this guy but I just don't think he has had a chance to prove himself at all. It was a good sign that he went with big Chara but bad luck that Chara took a cheap shot at him when he was tied up by officials.
The think Ivanans is the real thing and intimidates opponents compared to Downey. Also think that teams are more intimidated by Souray, Rivet and Begin than Downey.

Uhmm slash..stick to the face..whatever you want to call it. Klee hight sticked him in the face which was what caused his knee to buckel under him. Who cares about a stupid instigating rule?!?????!????? It was the FIRST PERIOD for Gods sake. As it was the resulting 5 on 3 in my opinion was th eturning point in the game. Montreal looked horrible, Begin was out, game over. Downey is there for just that purpose and is not a trainer there to help his teamate off the ice. He is there to make sure that the oppositionj does not take liberties with our stars. PERIOD. What if that had been Saks or Kovalev? Is it still ok for Downey to stand there and watch it happen?!?? Of course not. B ut maybe because it is Begin it is ok? We play Jersey again and they now know that it is ok to take liberties with certain players on the Canadiens. The only retribution they face is an aenemic power play.
