The Habs are in a penalty killing situation. A Hab defenseman losses his stick. Begin skates to the Dman and gives him his stick. He skates back to the point. The Ottawa player playing at the piont is about to take a shot. Begin, with no stick, gets in front of the shot and blocks it with has hand. The same point man is about to take another shot and Begin blocks it with his midsection. Ouch! He then lunges for the puck and attemps to clear it with his hand.
This guy makes us proud to be Hab fans every game he plays. I'm not sure if he's just crazy or his passion is limitless. Whatever he is, he makes every player around him want to give a little extra. That type of play is cantagious!
I think Begin was 2 parts gutsy and 3 parts nuts on that play. Souray had broken his stick. Personally, I think it would have been better overall if Begin had kept his stick to put pressure on the point men, and left Souray to clear the crease with his body.
It worked out well in the end with Begin blocking everything (I think the first one hit his ankle or the side of his leg), and my God the guy has balls (maybe not literally to get in front of shots that way), but I thought it was a bad decision to switch sticks.

How the HECK did we get this guy for ABSOLUTELY nothing?! What a pick up, definately a top 5 in fav players on the habs. His determination and passion is matched by NO ONE on the team. Defensively aware, a work horse...and can score goals...what else can you ask for!?
BEGIN!...YOU DA MAN!!!

Mine too, I love Begin, sometimes I like role type players better than stars, they're the ones who show up every night and give 110%. Hmm I'd say Begin is making like $750 000 but that's a guess.
you guys are bang on....begin has the most heart and determination i have ever seen in a player, love the guy!!!!!
i think he did the right thing with his stick because if the puck would have been down low, a cross crease pass would be an easy play to execute if the defenceman in front of the net doesn't have a stick.....either way the whole sequence of plays in that span were amazing and he deserves a pat on the back for that.
I could not believe my eyes when I saw that play...he gets hit right where any guy would hit the deck and STILL clears the puck. Him giving Shelly the stick was (I think) in hope that Souray would get off a rocket while he protected the point...but whatever the reason was, BEGIN FOR PM!
As much as I hate Darcy Tucker. Begin has the same qualities as that gritty type player. Although I don't think Tucker kills penalties, but Begin does not also get the ice time like Tucker. I beleive Tucker leads the Leafs with 25 goals. I have been telling Leafs all year that there is a problem with your team when your top goal scorer is Darcy Tucker.
Giving the stick to Souray...was the right play. That is taught from pee-wee all the way up. The defensman gets the stick.
And Begin is outstanding. My favorite type of player.
Anyone notice he has turned it up a notch since the departure of Daginais and Theo? Begin started the year flyin' then kinda dwindled. But seems to have turned it up since the departure of those two clowns.
And-o sits and watches Begin thinking to himself...why on Earth did Calgary throw this absolute treasure of a player into the trash???
Of course the guy is prone to penalty problems at times...but, when focused, he offers so much to a team in terms of heart and passion!
Just think...this guy won the MVP of the Calder Cup Playoffs (as voted by the coaches)...what does that tell you!!!
Steve Begin should be an alternate Captain of this team.
Mulsy made a point about Begin's production dropping off...And-o thinks it coincides more with Kovy getting an 'A'...because it really is a damn shame Begin doesn't wear one instead!!!

Good post And-o! Begin is a great on ice leader! Tough as nails.
Also, Calgary gave up on Martin St. Louis too early. Crazy ****!

Calgary also gave up on Brett Hull!! even crazier!!
When it comes to Begin the thing that sticks in my mind was 2 years ago in the playoffs against boston. He took 15 stiches to the face (not sure it was 15, but it was a lot), and the coaching staff and trainers had to tell him he couldn't get back on the ice. The guy was begging to get back out there. Remember him playing with the cage on? That is heart, all heart. As for him taking Kovy's A. I really don't think you will ever see that happen. We are basing all of our Kovy is not a good leader talk on hear say from Barry. I really think it is more that CJ is pissed because Alex was critical of his system. The guy was the captian of team Russia. All the hockey analysts talk about what a good leader he has become, and how great of a mentor he is to younger players. Look how good Markov has been since Alex came to our team. But as for Begin I would take an entire team of guys like him. I am sure he has never said I give up, or I can't do it. Gotta love the guy.

A rare barry33 agreement with And-O. The fact that Kovalev has an 'A' over Begin is a crime and is clearly a case of stroking the star's ego because I see ZERO leadership ability in #27. As far as Calgary disposing of Begin..it is about time the bhabs turned the tables. It is usually Montreal getting rid of players for nothing that end up being stars elsewhere.

Also, for the same reasons you mention, is why Perez never takes a turn riding the pines anymore.
The replay looked bad. Interesting to see how his injury will effect the lineup- who do you bring in to replace Steve Begin? Zednik? Sundstrom? I dont think so.
