Magic Number
Permalink Closed

A few days ago someone asked (Nil d' I think) what the Habs' Magic Number is.  Okay, here's my try.

Atlanta (closest team) has 76 points and 10 games left.  Their maximum is 96 points (if they win all ten games).  Montreal has 83 points with 9 games left.  They need to get to 97 points (if Atlanta wins all of their games) to guarantee a playoff spot.  Therefore, I figure their magic number is 7.  Any combination of Montreal wins and Atlanta regulation time losses adding up to 7.  If Montreal loses in OT or SO, take a half game off.  If Atlanta loses in OT or SO take a half game off as well.

If my logic is flawed (on this topic only) please let me know.

IT was me who brought up the topic, my number was 94 i believe. But your logic is much more accurate due to numbers, mine was just a guess. Lucky number 7 better be on our side! lets make it 6 tonight

That does work. Say the Habs were to win the next 3 and the Thrashers lose the next 4. No matter how the Canadiens were to do for the rest of the season, the Thrashers could only finish as high as 88 points with the Canadiens finishing at 89.

Doubt it'll be that easy though

Since I started this thread there has been one Montreal win and one Atlanta loss.

Magic Number is 5

Our magic number is still 5 points.  Atlanta has 81 points with 6 games remaining.  Total possible points of 93.  We have 89 points right now with also 6 games remaining.  So either we make it to 94 points, or 92 with 1 Atlanta loss, 90 with 2 Atlanta losses (regulation losses)

That's why we need to do away with OT losses and go for W-L like everyone else. That or make games 3 points. Regulation win is 3-0, OT win is 2-1 (heard that on the Fan radio I think.) Personally, I think it should be 2 points for a win no matter if it is OT or reg.

Anyway that would make the magic number so much eaiser.

Good to see you still posting Figs (hope that is OK to call you Figs),  thank you for not leaving.  We can't afford to lose anyone from our go habs family.
