Are we on the right track?

The Canadiens are going to finish anywhere from 6th to 10th in the standings. If the Habs mkae it into the playoffs as likely the 7th or 8th seed they will play either Carolina or Ottawa and probably eliminated in 4 or 5 games. Will that result qualify as a somewhat succesful season and the team being headed on the right path for the future? If the team fails to make the playoffs does it mean the Habs season was a total failure and a major overhaul is required?

To be succesful, a team needs two quality scoring lines, two solid defense combinations and an elite goalie. Thus far Huet appears to be delivering in goal. Markov,Souray and Rivet (if he continues to play at the level he is at now) could be considered top 4 material on defence. Obviously the Habs need another quality defenceman. Upfront seems to be where the major problem lies. Outside of Koviu,Kovalev and perhaps Ryder the Canadiens don't have enough skill to make up two quality forward units. As well, next year Koviu will be 32, and Kovalev will be 34 both moving into the downside of their carears. Of all the young talent the team has, it would appear Higgins and perhaps Kostitsyn could make major impacts in the short term. Even if they do, the Habs are at least 2 quality forwards away from having a nucleus upfront that could take them deep into the playoffs. As a legitimate contender the Habs seem to be moving in the right direction, but if they don't make the playoffs this year does it mean this team needs to be substantially changed or only minor alterations need to be applied? Outside of the talent issue, there is also the issue of team chemistry. Work ethic, and player rapport seem to be inconsistent and is that also a major consideration in terms of making this team a legitimate contender in the future?

It is way too late for montreal to consider this season successful. Even if we were to go into the finals, there are waaaay to many minus's and flaws on this team to consider it a real team. Personally i feel we have taken a major step back from 2 season ago. We lost what WAS a pretty decent goaltender, we still havent solved our lack of offense problem. Our defense is still shaky in places and we lack a REAL #1 defensman. Coaching changes dont help either. Overall it has beena  disappointing season, and the playoffs im really only hoping we make so i dont have to listen to the " yeah well the habs didnt make the playoffs " from all my sens fan friends around here ( i wont have to worry about leafs fans im almost positive )

Good analysis, wright.

I think you're too harsh on the young talent, however.  I would think that Plekanec and Perezhogin have good futures, and Komisarek will likely evolve into a good defenseman.  And let's not forget Bouillon.

Also Carey Price could be our future in goal.

So the future looks bright, I think, although we still do need a big stud defenseman and one - maybe two - quality offensive forwards.

personally i feel plekanec has a very solid future. HE is a great defensive forward and has an good offensive side to him. Our rookie of the year is definately higgins! I love that guy and i hope hes a hab for a very long time. Im looking forward to seeing chipchura make the jump soon, and i HOPE latendresse isnt a flop. Im starting to REALLY question him.

Plekanec,Perezhogin and Komisarek look to be able to have productive NHL  careers, the question is over the next couple of seasons can any of them evolve into an elite player that this team appears to be missing, or in the case of Perezhogin and Plekanec will their talent level make them useful third line players? Young defencemen take awile to mature and it seems still too early to figure which direction Komisarek will go. My question was with Koviu,Kovalev , Rivet Souray and Huet all moving into their '30's and with limited time horizons do the Canadiens have any youngsters that could develop quickly into elite players to complement the veterans. Outside of Higgins, and Kostitsyn I am not sure.
