An Open Letter to Garth Murray

Dear Garth

You are the epitome of the great western Canadian juniors who found their way to the NHL in the 1960s and 1970s.

Gangly kids full of p*ss and vinegar - they were the best thing about Canada's game!

I was a huge fan of the character and courage of Keith Magnuson - you remind me of him. He couldn't have weighed more than 140 lbs soaking wet when he broke in but he hit everything in sight and fought all comers - I bet his fight record those first few seasons would be something like 0 wins, 130 losses and no ties.

He never quit and by gawd by season 5 he was one of the most feared pugilists in the NHL - he learned to fight the hard way.

Keep it up and you'll retire with a fat bank account and a long. long list of fans.

P.S. If you are ever traded to another team, of course, I'll hate you.

Sincerely

Cleghorn

What are the consequences of the fight last night? Doesn't some rule penalize players who fight within the last five minutes of a game?

I stand to be corrected but I think it's "instigates" a fight in the final 5 minutes.

The guy who fought Murray last night - Ben Ondrus has probably taken Tie Domi's job (younger/cheaper) for next year .......Bye Bye Tie.......you've had a good run.......

More like he had a nice ride (as in on the coat tails of "Canada's favourite team")

I feel the same way. When Roy was traded, I had no trouble taking all the posters down.

But, to your original post, isn't it refreshing to have someone take a couple knocks for his team? I think more and more, the pieces are falling into place and we do have a team that can surprise.

Tie is signed for next year.  Talk in TO is that JF Jr didn't want him at that money  (1.5m per) or that length 2years but was forced into it by management (specifically the Tanenbaums who are neighbours of Tie in cottage country.)

Clegger, good to hear from you. Although I should talk, I hardly ever write in.

Loved your comment about Murray, I can recall guys from the 70's and 80's Habs teams that left a piece of themselves on the ice almost every night for the team. A few guys like this and the others are suddenly a few inches taller when they play.

Murray didn't have to fight with the game already won. I credit him for setting the tone for the next game. He has way more to offer than Downey. A better player that realizes his role to play tough.

If either player had received an instigator penalty, it's a game and a fine for the player as well as their coach.  That's supposed to be automatic, unless you are Wayne Gretzky.

Garth is a close friend of mine and continues to get better each game.  I predict with time he'll wear an "A" on this team.  He is very intelligent and a natural leader.  But he is one awful golfer.  The Hossa deal doesn't look so bad anymore, does it!?!

just tell Garth to keep it up, montreal needs 6 garth murrays to fill up two speedy and grinding checking lines. i think his scoring will come around and you could see him scoring 15-20 goals when he gets consistant playing time
