I've watched practically every single game played over the past 5 years & have never seen such appalling goaltending EVER!!! .... even with Theo's demise.
Abby skates out to the blue line to clear pucks, he never moves his damn blocker or catcher to make the save (it literally has to hit him for him to save it), he flops around in the net like a fish out of water (he's always losing his balance), he never sees the puck coming at him (even with a clear & open view) & he gives up huge rebounds constantly. Have I missed anything?????
It looks like Abby has never played organized hockey before, let alone professional. I would have rather kept Theodore as our back up... even as bad as he was doing. Was Abby worth the straight up even trade for Theo??? Not a chance.
You watch... Theo will light it up in Col. & Gainey will look like a giant Dumb@$$. Does BG even have a clue?
During last nights game I found myself ready to vomit when they started Abby. So much so I had to run for the Gravol to get through the first 5 minutes. Half way through the 2nd period I grabbed my bucket & nausea wristbands.......by the end... I was praying to the porcelain gods. (Not really but wow... what an awful goaltending performance) Why didn't BG pull him???? Does he realize we are running to keep our Playoff spot??? It's been 13 years since our last cup.... that's our longest drought ever.
As for our Defensive playing.... yes it could be stronger, I do agree, but when you have to rely solely on your defensive play to keep the pucks out of the net, it's time to pull the goalie & start Huet. Huet doesn't seem to have a problem with our defensive play.
As for needing more scoring chances.... We got 4 beauty goals last night, not the weak frickin' goals the Abby let in. My 10 yr old daughter could have goaltended better then him.
Please don't rely on listening to the game or watching highlights to make your conclusions either, you must see this crap with your own 2 eyes. (But then you'll want to poke out your own eyes, trust me) Did you notice that Abby laughed after one of these fluffy goals the Pens got? He thought it was funny?? Well tons of fans (including myself) don't find him amusing at all.
Gainey better change his strategy & fast. If he screws up our post season chances, he won't be able to show his face in or around Montreal.
TO BG ~ Huet & Kovalev will get us there, use them, don't sit them.
Did you never see Jim Carey play with the blues or Potvin in Boston? Too bad, because abby looked like a Vezina winner next to that drek!
Yeah, I was speaking solely about the Canadiens though.
But to make the point, Who would you compare Abby to now? No one right?... he's in a league of his own isn't he..... or at least he thinks he's in a league all of his own. lol
Excuses or comparisons aren't needed for this guy.... look @ the obvious, his actions say it all.
BTW ~ I can't believe I saw Abby & Vezina in the same sentence, without it saying "Abby is the antithesis of a Vezina winner" LOL
Thanks for the comments please feel free to speak your mind here anytime.
come on, after only two games, you want to get rid of him! the first game was not his fault. the second game he didn't play well at all, but he is trying to fit in montreal, give him a chance and time to settle in, plus, the players in front of him are not playing to well.
I can give you about 5.5 million reasons why I would rather have Abby behind Huet.
I see your point Jay, Theo was given away & we saved 5.5 mil. What did Gainey spend the 5.5 on???? Nothing at all. That strategy won't get us a cup any time soon, & maybe not even a playoff spot.
Does anyone realize that Abby is a free agent at the end of the season? What good will that do us? Is he just here long enough to screw with our playoff chances????
We'll all know in due time..... either I will eat my words or you will. Who's to say????? I'm betting he won't see many more starts for us.
And if he does... I'm betting we'll be entertained with his fish out of water routine. If you flop around long enough, the puck is bound to hit you eventually. They couldn't wait to unload him either.... remember that.
Now that Theo won't be bombarded by the media, he'll rise again. Just remember Roy. It's deja vu all over again.
But the same can be said of Huet when he arrived. Goalie coach Rollie Melanson worked with Huet and it's payying dividends. I think it will be more difficult for Abby because the season's end is fast approaching. So if Gainey gives Abby spot duty relief , then okay. And Abby will be much better come next season after off-season tutoring with Melanson.
yes Aebischer is not very polished., But the same can be said of Huet when he arrived. Goalie coach Rollie Melanson worked with Huet and it's payying dividends. O.K. I see your point but will Abby be with our team next season??? He's an unrestricted free agent real soon.

I can't see how it matters if Aebischer sticks around or not. By the middle of July, the Habs will know whether Huet will still be here, or if Aebischer will be here or neither. They have freed up over 5 million dollars in cap space. The cap is projected to be anywhere from 41 - 45 million. That's a pile of dough to pick up a goaltender if neither stay, not to mention a front line scorer. And if Huet sticks around, Danis will make a fine backup. I doubt that BG even wants Aebischer to stay.

Theo was and will be three times the goaltender Aebischer will ever be. That being said, Theo was not likely to return to form with the Habs and was a major distraction to the team (although sadly it does not seem Theo was the only distraction). If the Habs do make the playoffs, Aebischer will be and excellent fall back if Huet cools off. While I'm not pleased with the timing of Aebischer cooling off and stinking out the joint in two critical games, he's a much better goalie than 5 goals a game. Yes he needs to adjust, unfortunately being one point away from the golf course is just about the worst possible time for a goalie to e looking for his "A" game.
My predictions on Theo, he will come back and play the last 4 or 5 regular season games and stand on his head in the playoffs. This guy is and was an elite goalie (so he was in a bad slump, it happens to ALL goalies, most recover). He'll want to prove Gainey wrong. All this talk about Theo having a tough time with the new equipment, BS! Let's not forget how great he was in the first 17 games this year...wearing new equipment. I was a major Theo supporter from day one, he is probably the best goalie in the league on lateral movement and has been the best positioning goalie in previous years, but even I agree it was time for him to go, for the good of the team as well as for the good of his career.
Aebischer has only played 2 games!!!! Theo managed to bomb about a dozen before they made the decision to give him the chop.
Theo WAS a great goalie for one season, 2002 - 2003. He was average in 2003-2004 and bloody awful in 2005-2006. I had no problem letting him go, especially with that contract.
The difference between Roy and Theo is that Roy was the best tender in the league when they traded him and Theo was the worst, statistically anyhow. If Theo was still playing we would be nowhere near a play-off spot.

O.k. but remember this ..... Roy wasn't pulled through the media ringers like Theodore was either.
Once Theo became the "award winning" goalie of that time, the media wouldn't let up on the guy. It was like he was the tabloid trashed Tom Cruise of Montreal & of the entire hockey organization.
It's hard to perform when you get that kind of crap flung at you every second of everyday.
Here's a perfect explanation of what I mean......
Say you are in bed with your partner & you are expected to perform amazingly in the "fun time" department approx. 2-3 times per week..... and usually you do. But say for a little while, your performance was not up to snuff, whether it be because of work problems, family problems, an injury, an illness ... what ever. Well after a few "sessions" like that your partner turns to you & says... "What the hell's a matter with you" "You're a good for nothing bum" "BOOOOOOOO" "HIIISSSSS" blah blah blah.... & they leave you letters everywhere ranting about how awful your performance has been.... then they go public & trash your ego that much more in front of millions........
How able / eager would you be to display 100% of your talent / abilities for them?
I bet Theo will kick @$$ is Col. I feel it's the fair-weather fans attitudes & the media bullying that brought on the Theodore demise.
He's with a team now that wants to see him succeed & recognizes his true value. That's why they took him, broken ankle, poor stats & all.

I'll miss him dearly. It was a sad sad day around here when I heard he was traded, let alone straight up for Abby.
I know he wasn't playing his focused game & wasn't worth the millions for our team to keep him as backup, but geez.... people need to give the guy a break. The same ones trashing him so loudly now are the same ones that were cheering / chanting the loudest in his award winning season.
Like I said... fair-weather fans.
Why do our fans treat our teammates sooo poorly???? Whatever happened to routing for the home team & booing their opponent? It's like turning against a friend for doing something wrong & then flogging them in public for it. In the end, they'll never be the same friend they once were to you. They won't trust you, they'll feel like they are walking on eggshells every time they see you & then they start pulling away from you until they are gone from your life forever. Now what do you have to show for it????? The memories of a great friend that you once had but took for granted.
Do you know of any other teams in the NHL that have fans like we have???
Stop booing our players @ our home games... I betcha morale goes up 100%
Thanks for your comments. I'm glad I'm not the only one who still sees the #1 goaltender in him.
While I will agree with you that the media was all over Theo, don't say that they brought it on him because they weren't the ones letting garbage goals in. The media didn't make his family a bunch of loan sharks, the media didn't tell him to go and do awful commercials, they didn't make him to use hair products containing banned substances and they didn't make him slip and ruin his ankle. Coupled with his brutal play, he's brought this all upon himself.
Part of being a high-paid professional athlete is dealing with the media and stress. For 5+ million dollars I think he should be able to handle it and he obviously couldn't.

Dealing with the media.... is that what you are calling it? Dealing
It was more like gross defamation of character, tied with brutal verbal public attacks.... but that wouldn't take it's toll on your ego right? You're unshakable right?
No they didn't directly make all that happen, but when your mind is on a million other things that you are being slandered about in public... your performance will suffer. So indirectly... yes they did.
#1) You didn't choose your family, well neither did he.... yet he was severely punished & viciously attacked for his family's actions & not his own.
#2) I can't see how commercials have anything to do with anything... I must of missed that issue entirely. Or maybe you're just trying to find things to make your debate topic tally higher. Who knows....
#3) He was using that hair crap for years & it was only banned recently. He was using it legally... even an employee of the NHL picked up his prescriptions for him on numerous occasions. & lets face it..... is Theo on steroids???? ummmm NO!!!! He's a small guy, don't you think someone on steroids would be much bigger? & Don't you think steroids would have helped his game?
#4) His ankle???? Dear God, you will reach for just about anything to complain about!!! There are many hockey players in the NHL that have hurt themselves & others off the ice & it's been over dumb **** like drinking & driving or fights etc. They weren't injured while they were salting their stairway outside so their extremely pregnant girlfriend wouldn't slip on the icy steps & risk harm to herself & their unborn child. & it was obviously a danger wasn't it???? He got hurt didn't he??? Would you have felt better if it was her that fell???? We do get wonderfully cold winters here in Canada you know, ice happens!!!. Have you never slipped & fallen??? Hurt yourself in any way??? If not... look out.... Karma's a bitch!!!!
And lastly..... What do you call Abby's goals???? Were they not garbage???? But you & others are happy to make excuses for him right????
Next I'll hear, Abby's problem is the Altitude..... the Altitude... yeah that's it, ALTITUDE!!!!!! Is that another good excuse for his play????
But what will next weeks excuse be???He ummmm, had a band-aide on his left thumb & ummmm, it was making his thumb itchy & ummmmm, that's why he's letting in all those goals on the glove side.
and then maybe they'll blame the mask.... the mask isn't painted... that's why he's playing sooo poorly. If he just painted the mask, he'll be great. And so on and so on and so on....

Why not? You are using the media as the reason behind Theodore's poor play. As far as your example of performing during "fun time". If I was being paid millions of dollars to produce, you are darn right I should be called on it (thank God I'm not paid millions...). Jose Theodore and David Aebischer are professional atheletes and as part of their job as professional atheletes is to perform under all sorts of pressures, including media. While I had wished for Huet to start against Pitt, as they need to create some distance between themselves and the 9th placed and lower teams, and Aebischer looked pathetic, that doesn't mean I will miss Theodore. If even just once, he had showed frustration or disappointment in himself, instead of the total ambivalence or finger pointing, maybe I would mourn the loss of his services.

As for all you fans making excuses for Abby & saying he'll be the one we'll want to play for us in the playoffs... He cost us points, & one game was with the Pens. Will we even see the playoffs??????
With Atlanta 1 point out of 8th & the Toronto 3 points out we need every point we can get... We just don't have the time for him to "work out the kinks" or our season's over.
Would you rather give up our season to let him play????

I don't think you are getting what the other forum members are saying. I didn't see anybody that thinks he is the number one goalie on this team. I believe that all they are saying is, they are happier with Huet starting and Aebischer backing up, than Theodore being here at all.

You show me where in the contract it states... "A you must take horrific abuse from the fans & media, you & your family have agreed to have all your families personal business aired out in public for you to be fully responsible for & publicly rebuked for... even though it's not you... it's them" etc....
Were you ever picked on as a kid???? I'm sure you know that even the strongest person will break if bullied long enough. Admit it.... he was verbally insulted & assaulted repeatedly since his high season, without a lull.
He was a hero to many & when some people see something like that (somebody other than them being fawned over), they make it their mission to personally destroy the "heroes" image.... & they did a good job didn't they???
& as for his actions on & off the ice regarding his play.... I think he held to true form. Good for him!!!!
Why would you say he wasn't showing disappointment or frustration??? Because he wasn't screaming, swearing & flipping out when it was obviously his fault????? He continuously said he was disappointed in himself. "I'm getting very frustrated with my game" he said (I'm quoting verbatim) I know he speaks with a thick accent but come on.... You heard him say it.
He's gone now & I don't really see how you not mourning him affects me at all, but you'll see, he'll prove that MEDIA WAS IN FACT A HUGE ISSUE with his play. Without those pressures, he's free to breath & concentrate on the game at hand.
You show me where in the contract it states... I think that clause is in the "we'll pay you millions to play a game for a living" section. He is not the first, nor will he be the last to get attacked in the media. This is what it is like to play in Montreal.
And, I'm sorry to say it, but, this is a 'what-have-you-done-for-me-lately' sport. That is why Brian McCabe stands to make over 4.5 million next contract. That is why Segei Fedorov makes over 6 million per year. Is it fair? No. It is just the way it is.

Really??? Because I have read that exact line (abby's the #1) in several peoples posts. I've heard about how Abby will be our guy in the playoffs etc. Does that sound like they feel he's the #2 to you? I'm not speaking only to those who have left comments to my posts, I am speaking regarding everything I have read on GOHABS.
I think it would be better with Huet starting & Danis backing up! But who am I to say?
& as for Theo.... He is gone man!!!! He's gone!!!! Gone I say!!!! People, stop living in the past. This post is not called "Bring back Theodore" & it never was. I am speaking bluntly but honestly about the skills that Abby is (or is not) showing us when we need it the most.
We are 2 points from losing our playoff spot to Atlanta & 4 points from the Leafs... THE FRICKEN" LEAFS!!! It's just that simple! Why would you want to play a guy, or give the guy chance, after chance, after chance, when you are sooo close to the end of the season & so close to losing your playoff contention??? Did anyone watch the 2 hours he's played for us??? He couldn't have stopped a beach ball & his blocker & catcher barely moved.
This is plain & simple. You keep in your HOT goalie when you are struggling to keep your playoff spot. You should want to climb higher in the standings, not lower. I'm sick of struggling year after year after year to barely make the playoffs, just to be taken out after 1 or 2 rounds if we do make it.
I was reading the posts on GOHABS & was sick of hearing people defend this guy. He played this way because or he played that way because... so I left my post.
Put it this way, He might be the best damn goalie in the NHL... I'm no scout, but I am capable of simple math & I have 20/20 vision. We're close to losing our season without a chance to make run for the cup. Abby shouldn't come in & be giving the opportunity to play over Huet when Abby's game is obviously not here.... It's that easy.
Playoffs before Pride ~ I hope Gainey knows that!!!!!
Yikes, great stuff - like the old days with some of the bitter rivals on the board. Love it.
Remember where Abby is coming from - he is adjusting to a totally different system in front of him. No Blake and co. to clear his bad rebouds. Ever change employer? I mean, even if you are playing a game of cards with a partner, you have to learn how your teammates play. Skill alone can only get you so far.
And stop comparing Theo to Roy. Roy had 2 cups, was the best goalie for a while. Theo is no Roy and never will be. Abby is just like 10 other goalies in the league. So whether or not he's in town next year, or Huet for that matter, is no concern because they can easily be replaced. So, I for one, see the sense of why Theo is gone and look forward to the pieces we replace im with. If we get a guy who can pot some goals, then we can settle for a goalie who is "less-good" than Theo. We can pick up a solid forward and d-man and we have depth in goal in the system, so no worries here.
