I heard Scotty Bowman on the radio this morning, and he wondered out loud several times the same thing. Jean was scheduled to be on the same radio program later in the morning, and unfortunately, I missed that. Perhaps someone else heard him on the Fan 590.

In reply to those who have asked, Canadiens Hall of Famer and ambassador Jean Beliveau did not attend Saturday's ceremony because he is out of the country on vacation. He had spoken to the Geoffrion family some weeks ago to advise them he could not attend.

Whew! That a relief. I'm not ready to lose him yet.
My all-time favourite athlete, any sport, any era, male or female. The best captain in NHL history.

You can find big Jean and his wife in Barbados every March guys and gals...my father-in-law (or ex-father-in-law as it were) used to golf with him every year.

And-o, you're just going to have to take my word for this one!

Agree with you there And-o. I think we probably started watching hockey around the same time.
But let's not forget that the Moose failed to even get the Rangers into the playoffs for 7 straight seasons, all the while on a star-studded team (at least most of the time). I still think he was a truly massive leader, but it does make you wonder exactly how you measure "leadership" (which is such an issue around here).
Let's also not forget that of all people, Steve Yzerman had his leadership questioned for almost half of his NHL career.

You are bang on there, Plouf. I was living across the creek when Stevie Y became captain, and nobody could believe that such a young guy could lead the team. You may not hear a whole bunch about what he does that makes him a leader, but you NEVER hear questions about his ability to lead.

The other thing that was often said about Yzerman was that he was very quiet, didn't speak up in the dressing room enough, wasn't fiery enough. Same thing has been said about Sakic.
I don't know how the Red Wings managed to forge a team out of all those egos and different personalities. Fedorov? Strange personality, but when crunch time came he was great at both ends. McCarty, Hull (when he was there), Kozlov, Shanahan, Konstantinov, Lidstrom...a real mixed bag, but a lot of character. Anyway, it could've been Yzerman, but probably it was Scotty above all.
