I am starting to agree with Barry, maybe CJ wasnt the problem, maybe it is our MORON gm.  Theo for abisher?  Why not theo for a bag of pucks.  My god, Danis is better than Abisher.

They wanted to unload his contract and didn't have confidence he could come back in Montreal.

We have just dumped 3.5 million per season. That's a good thing. Now we can go after Luongo in 2007.

I do not get this at all - this is Patrick Roy all over again.  We should have at least picked up a defenseman or scoring.  This is ridiculous.

Does this mean we are going to sign Luongo next year?

Does this pave the way for more deals to be made now?

It is a pretty weird trade if you think about it... Colorado giving up their starting for a goalie that is going to be on the shelf for a while, and is having a horrible season at that.

First off, what does this Aibisher guy make per season? If we can save 2.5 mil per year that is a good thing. But...Yikes. I would have figured a draft pick as well or a prospect of some kind.

Huge contract to get rid of so it had to be done. I don't think Theo would have made it back in Montreal...to much pressure. Watch him burn it up as an AV

Atleast he didn't go to an eastern team. We will only have to see him 2 times a year

Write this down now...Theo will come back to burn us like Roy did. Ironic eh? Same teams. But hey ..pftt..I am not the GM , Gainey is. While you are in the giving mood Bob how about Kovalev for a new set of tires for the Zamboni? Know what bugs me about this trade and about Gainey as a GM? It was only a few short months ago that Gainey thought that Theo was the second coming of Jesus Christ and gave Theo the huge contract. Now he is worth David Abeshier who the Avs do not want..nice...

Canadiens trade Theodore to Avalanche
Jose Theodore

Jose Theodore

3/8/2006 7:41:51 PM

DENVER (CP) - The Montreal Canadiens traded goalie Jose Theodore to the Colorado Avalanche for netminder David Aebischer on Wednesday.

''Our entire hockey staff is very excited about the addition of Jose Theodore,'' Avalanche president and GM Pierre Lacroix said in a statement. ''With this acquisition, we are convinced that we are securing our goaltending position for many years.''

The deal marks the second time a high-profile goalie has left Montreal for Denver. Patrick Roy also was sent to the Avs by the Habs.

Theodore, 29, is making $4.5 million US this season but has had a rough go of it of late. His goals-against average is 3.46 and his save percentage is .881.

Theodore fractured a bone in his right heel on Feb. 18 while walking down the icy steps of his Montreal home. He is expected back in late March.

if(dUnitBox==true){boxAd=true;}
if(boxAd){if((!dUnitSky)||(dUnitBox)){place300x250();}}

Cristobal Huet has been playing goal for the Habs in his absence.

Theodore won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player in 2001-02, leading the Canadiens to their first playoff berth in three seasons. He is only sixth goaltender in NHL history to win the Hart.

Aebischer, 28, is due to make $1.9 million this season. He has a GAA of 2.98 and save percentage of .900.

The only way this makes sense is if Gainey has one BIGGIE up his sleeve!

...hasn't this type of deal backfired before...oh yeah, some guy named Patrick!

The Habs weren't gonna get any amazing deals for theo, he is injured, and is playing like those plastic goalies you put in during novice practices. Yes I would have liked to seen more coming to MTL. But thats the way it was played out. I said we should have traded him the season afterwards when he had that good year, we could have gotten alot for him. But unfortunately, that is not the case

As badly as Theo has done lately, I can GUARANTEE YOU that Pierre Lacroix grabbed this deal faster than my ex wife grabs my child support payment. AT THE VERY LEAST Gainey could have gotten an second rounder too. I full appreciate the salary dump thing, but there is dumping salary and there is giving away the farm. Theo just went with the goats.

I'm happy with the trade in regards that we are not stuck with Theo's increasing salary. Atleast we now have a backup.....

Our Salary is now at 31 million, with 9 mil to wiggle around in this season, and with the cap increases coming in the following seasons, we can make some moves, bring players in, and not be bound to a 6-million dollar stick-boy

It's a shocker. Despite all the posts suggesting that Theo get moved, I didn't expect it to happen -- and certainly not in a 1 for 1 trade for another (much less talented) goalie. Is Bob a good enough chess player to be planning several moves ahead? Will he pleasantly surprise us next by signing an elite center or defenseman who can really help this team drive to the playoffs? Or is he just going to sit on his spare cash, see what this group can do, and look to improve the squad over the summer? Only time will tell.

There are two things that bother me about this trade, though. One -- what does it say about the GM that he loses all faith in a player so quickly and completely -- and especially in a player that he signed to such a big contract not too long ago. I fully expected that Theo would regain his form, and now it's guaranteed that he will -- in Colorado.

The other thing that bothers me is what does this move say to Cristo Huet? "You've done a great job for us, Cris, but you're a free agent at the end of the year and just in case you lose your edge we're going to bring in a second-stringer." Can't be a big confidence boost for Huet.

I'm not going to get hysterical about this, though. It saves us money and in reality doesn't change who we put on the ice at all since Theo was out injured anyway. Maybe it will inspire some of the team's other supposedly elite players (we do have some, don't we?) to step up their games or risk the same fate.

Let's go beat the Bruins and take it from there.

Les Canadiens sont la

I love it how the avs fans are not happy at all as well. LOL.

Here is why its good that theo is gone:

The team can come together as a unit, one less faction to worry about now that Dags and Theo are gone

His big salary will allow us to make room for other players

He was playing really bad, and is an expensive backup (where as Abish is a good backup with a good price tag)

He was a distraction to the whole team.

He needs a change of scenry to play well

He went to a Western team, therefore he is out of our hair.

Kudos to Gainey! He redeemed himself. It was a terrible signing to a very over-rated, inconsistent goalie. He had to dump him and it's a pleasant surprise someone wanted to gamble on that salery in these times!

Also feel that Theo belongs in a padded room rather than padded equipment! The guy is a troubled mind that probably would lose concentration chewing gum!

For those that are comparing this to the Roy trade....don't! Theo isn't good enough to wash Roy's can! Not even in the same league!

Good bye to the little peewee goalie and his troubles!

We're a better richer team because of this!

In a way it has helped fix two mistakes with the fact that we can now go out and still acquire a number one center or a talented gritty player for our first line!

 I like this trade!

 Jose who???????????????

Yes but Barry, you have to admit, given the history of a Hart and Vezina trophy less than 2 years before and a pretty impressive junior carreer + being a hometown boy...Gainey at least had to give him a chance...all signs pointed to go...he had no real choice. The ONLY trade the Montreal media would have accepted was if he got Luango or Lecavlier( neither was going to happen).

In short...Gainey had no choice.

ALSO....I don't think Gainey was all that comfortable with THEO anyhow...Thus price was born!

I honestly think it's a brilliant trade.  Theo was out for most of the regular season and likely would of sat on the bench upon his return anyway.  The team(players) had lost all confidence playing in front of him.  He has really struggled with the new equipment rules and his rebound control has been junior B.  We now have another proven NHL starter to step in when Huet struggles....which is now.....AND we have opened the door for another $3 million dollars of cap room to sign an impact player.  The great thing is that Theo will be in the west and really can't bite us too badly.  The fans that should be skeptical are the AV's fans.......they received an overpaid, underachieving, injured goalie that has been a real flop thus far in the new NHL.  He may turn it around but they now have to deal with his salary and his struggles.  Remember folks this is not the Patrick Roy story......Roy struggled in one game and Tremblay didn't pull him and then demanded a trade.  Theo has pooped the bed consistently ALL year.  See ya...see ya!!

WHO CARES HOW HE DOES IN COLORADO! THEO HAD TO GO. THE PRESSURE HE HAD SO FAR WOULD OF BEEN NOTHING COMPARED TO WHAT WAS AWAITING FOR HIM ON HIS RETURN. HE WOULD BE UNDER A MICROSCOPE EVERY GAME, EVERY SAVE, EVERY GOAL AGAINST...ETC.

Aebischer is 14-5-1 since jan 1st. Right now our team and the media had no confidence in theodore, plus we needed another goalie. Danis isn't proven enough to step in and contribute as the #2 in some crucial games this month. We lost the toronto game because of penatlies and because Huet looked tired. Now we have two capable goalies, i wish this trade was made before the 3 games in 4 nights we just went through.

We now have quite a bit of room under the cap. Last season the habs got Kovalev, i know Gainey wont give up the farm but i wonder who could be moved and whos available to be brought in.
